CRIME, prostitution vs. drug dealing

Arch Bishop Don Magic Juan will be hosting the Legendary Players Ball Convention Saturday, December 3rd at 7 PM at Mariella Banquet Hall, 124 S. 5th Avenue, Maywood.

Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, Polaris Project, Hudson Institute and Rep. Karen Yarbrough are disseminating a media advisory announcing a press conference to present the "not happy" face of prostitution. The press conference is at 5 PM before the ball.

The people denouncing prostitution will be pushing the Predator Accountability Act and the federal End Demand for Sex Trafficking Act of 2005.

As a local issue, there was something about Yarbrough's Carrie Nation indignation that bothered me. Yarbrough said prostitution has hurt many lives deeply in Maywood and surrounding communities. She's probably right.

But I don't like the politics of symbolism. And protesting a convention is a symbolic act. It's not like having the Players Ball at Mariella Banquet Hall is going to inspire women to become prostitutes or men pimps. They will come, spend their money and leave.

If Yarbrough wanted to tackle an important local vice issue, what's she doing about drug dealing, especially street drug dealing?

Politics involves balancing interest groups and making compromises. The reality is that drug dealing is a significant part of the local economy. It's easy to rail against some out-of-town pimps at Mariella. It's tougher to call out the drug dealing organizations.

From what I've seen, street drug dealing is holding back Proviso Township more than prostitution.

  • Yarbrough has no platform in her run for re-election. When are you going to wake up and see she is a phony?

  • If Karen Yarbrough is a phony, she's a phony with supporters that can put together complex ideas and form paragraphs and arguments.

  • Any comments on the demonstration against the Player's Ball?

The media sure turned-out in force.

Did anybody catch Lula Greenhow's argument against the demostration?

Was Welch or Moore invited to participate?

  • Maywood's elected officials should be ashamed of themselves. They knew weeks and months ago about the event at Mariella's. If they wanted to stop the event, they could have. This was nothing but grandstanding. When are the Maywood elected officials and Rep Yarbrough going to do something about the murders, drug dealers and gang bangers. They had every police officer in the village around Mariella's during their newsconference. Who was protecting the rest of the village? This whole unnecessary newsconference jeopardized lives Saturday night. Shame on you Mayor Yarborough. Shame on you Rep Yarborough.

  • Here's some media coverage of the event.

    * Sun-Times (Monifa Thomas)
    * Chicago Tribune (Johnathon E. Briggs)
    * Sun Times (Mary Mitchell, Dec. 3)
    * Sun Times (Mary Mitchell, Dec. 4)

I have a quibble with Monifa Thomas' coverage. I don't remember the "hey, hey, ho, ho" chant. It seemed obviously ironic to listen for.
