ED, Welch's legal bills [D88]

West Proviso Herald (John Huston) has an article that begins:
School District 88 spent $310,000 in legal expenses over an 18-month period -- more than twice that of neighboring districts of comparable size.

Are Emanuel Christopher Welch's legal bills reasonable?

  • For those that are joining the story in progress, Welch is a candidate for state representative. He's running against Karen Yarbrough.

Yarbrough and I are friends. In September Welch and his brother sued me for defamation. The Welch brothers withdrew the suit after I got a law firm that started fighting back. Since the suit was withdrawn my attorneys have filed a motion to sanction Welch and his law firm.

Anything else that's relevant and important?

  • I looked at Welch's bills over a six month period of time. I counted the number of work days (not weekends or federal holidays). When I divided the number of days into Welch's total bill, I came up with Welch working an average of six billable hours per day.

Other attorneys have indicated that billing six hours per day for six months is almost impossible without padding.

During this period District 88 was negotiating contracts. My understanding is that normally the superintendent negotiates the contract and the lawyer proof reads the contract and provides answers on specific points.

Did Welch attend all contract negotiations? This would account for the high number of hours. But Welch attending all negotiations would be unusual, from my understanding.

Did Dr. Willie Mack request Welch's presence for the negotiations or was this requested by the board?

  • Huston wrote, In February 2005, Welch and his firm were abruptly fired as District 88's board attorney for unknown reasons.

Anybody want to expound on these "unknown reasons"?

  • Ummmmm...not sure.

Although, I once knew an attorney who was fired for forgery...

  • What's with you and your hatred towards Welch? This entire site is a joke. I've only visited this site a few times based on what I've heard others talk about and Carl you really need to get a life. If you don't agree with Welch then fine but what about all the other board members and their dark and dreary pasts. If you are going to get down and ugly with one then tell about the others... Flowers, Kerry, and copycat Marine got some stuff out there on them as well. They display their ignorance once a month at board meetings. Why don't you tell what they have to hide and why they keep up so much confusion on the board? They have no interest in the district all they are doing is giving you some stupid stuff to focus your narrow-minded attention on. Apparently you like being a sounding board for them. How much are you getting paid out of the deal or is it that you're not getting paid since the money train was stopped back in July.

  • A Welch by another name is still a Welch said...
    Carl,

No need to address "The Welch" disguised as "anonymous".
The transparency of his futile attempt is pathetic at best.

As usual, his postings are devoid of facts and basic common sense.

Isn't that what we all want in a school board president?

Dishonesty and a lack of integrity...enter the year of the Welch!!!
