POL, Paul Esparza vs. Eugene Moore [M02]

The trial of Paul Esparza vs. Eugene Moore is in progress. Esparza has sued for defamation. I spoke briefly to Esparza’s attorney Bob Habib. The following testified today (Monday): Eugene Moore, Askia Abdullah and David Sharp.

Moore is the Proviso Democratic Committeeman and Cook County Recorder of Deeds.

Abdullah is a disbarred attorney who has various duties at the Recorder of Deeds office.

Sharp is the husband of Maywood Trustee Wanda Sharp.

Esparza is a former associate of Moore who ran against Moore for committeeman in 2002. Esparza is the husband of Christina Nowakowski, aka Christina Esparza, who has been missing since October, 2005.

The trial will resume tomorrow. I will attend and get more information.

  • He is not nor ever was married to Christina Nowakowski. Get your facts STRAIGHT!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12:09 PM, January 24, 2006

  • I'm sorry. Christina Nowakowski and Paul Esparza were never legally married. They lived together for decades, had children together and Christina used the name "Christina Esparza" but technically they were never married.

  • Wow, it seems unbelievable but how the chickens can come home to roost. 21 years ago, Chris, Paul's common-law wife ran against me for village trustee (she got 17% of the vote) and it was the dirtiest campaign I have ever experienced including terrible swear words spray painted on my yard signs and broken windows on my vans and unsigned hate mail delivered on the Friday before the election. I have always had my suspicions on who was responsible but, whoever it was, I knew that if Paul Esparza was involved in the campaign, it would NOT be about issues but it would involve "dirty" campaigning. I still use that campaign with students as an example of what political campaigning should NOT be about. Let it be said loud and clear to those today who would conduct such kinds of campaigning how decisively the negative forces were rejected by the electorate. Over the years Paul worked for whoever would "pay" him the most but it certainly NEVER, in my opinon involved who had the best ideas for legislation or administration of a governmental unit.

  • gary gary gary.....you know you are one funny guy. You talk all this shit about maywood, the township & the schools, yet you take your happy ass to work at a school in ELMHURST! If you cared so much about our town, wouldn't you teach here? and try and make maywood schools more productive? You have been a trustee for 88 years (yes that's an exaggeration)...yet you have nothing to show how you have helped our community. Oh and Nomco doesn't count!

  • Dear fraidy cat "tired of Gary" or another anonymous. First of all you do not deny one single factual statement I made. Second, get your facts right. I student taught and then taught for 32 years in Elmwood Park. In 1965, never having heard of Elmwood Park or Maywood, before being hired to teach in Elmwood Park, I chose Maywood to buy a home in BECAUSE, every other suburb close to where I was teaching, were lily white and I and my wife would NOT have that. Since 1968 I have suported, often working very hard, for EVERY school board candidate who would get rid of the political machine that considered jobs and contracts more important than what our children were learning (or not learning). I proudly sent my children to District 89 and then Proviso East while definitely NOT HAPPY with the kind of non-education they got from Dannyboy Coglianese's schools. Now we still have the same kind of school boards and Gene Moore is at least the front person for these kinds of sorry school systems. Please disagree with decisions I have made over the years as to who I have supported or opposed and for decisions I have made as a Maywood Trustee BUT, do it openly as I do and I will continue to respond as best as I can.

  • tired of gary, what sort of accomplishment are you looking for from Maywood's trustees?

By Blogger Carl Nyberg, at 11:46 PM, January 25, 2006

  • It is amazing to see when two close friends like Asparza and Moore end up fighting !
There once was a time When Paul and Gene were inseparable ! They were the go to guys of Maywood Politics! They were always with Jimmy Peralli and they were called the Three Amigos! At that time they were all Republicans and were trying to take over Maywood and control 209 and the Township!
But the power got to there heads and they started to double cross one another! Things got bad, and after Paul and Paralli , along with Taddeo made Moore Democratic Committeman and State Rep., Eugene Moore forgot about Paulie and Jimmy and dropped them for Danny Cogliniese!
He hired his new friends and kicked out his old friends who made him who he was and who fought for him in the trenches!
Now in the twilight of there years, those 2/3 parts of the three amigos are facing each other in court! Life is sad, because I know that both Moore and Asparza truely care for each other, they just can't admit it!

  • Carl,

Did you attend today? What i found out is that the jury was dismissed today and ordered to continue first thing tomorrow morning. Also that 2/3 of the jury are all ready in favor of esparza. Let us know carl.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 6:19 PM, January 26, 2006

  • what i hear is that there is talk of a settlement for 5 million! That would fuckin send moore into bankruptcy! What's up carl? Carl if that's true, is it 5 million from each defendant?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 6:27 PM, January 26, 2006

  • If Esparza gets any money will he ask CHRISTINA'S mother & sisters to pick up her personal items? I hear there are over 90 boxes. I am ready to pick them up and hold them for my sister so as to keep them from going to charity.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 6:39 PM, January 26, 2006

  • Hey Carl,
Is it true that Esparaza's daughter testified that she actually talked to Christina this month? Were you there? Is this true Carl?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:27 PM, January 26, 2006

  • Well I guess her daughter has joined the club!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:33 PM, January 26, 2006

  • This whole story going on right now with the putting up of yard signs illigally, and bailing out his ignorant cronie just further proves that Moore is nothing but a crooked politican. I personally do hope Karen Yarbarough does take the committeeman spot from him this time around! Didn't Carl say that Moore said he never puts up yard signs without permission? Now we see what truth was in that comment! Heres a good point If Gene has so much pull and support in this community, then why would this incident have even happened? Lookes like Moore is losing his grip! I just think its about time Proviso Township wakes up and kicks this scum to the street where he belongs. And no longer lets this shady man have influence over the political direction of this township!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:35 PM, January 26, 2006

  • annonymous at 7:33 what club would that be?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:58 PM, January 26, 2006

  • how does picking up boxes have anything to do with all this. Talk about jumping from one subject to the next

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 8:00 PM, January 26, 2006

  • Some members of Chris' family have been contacted and asked whether they wanted her personal belongings otherwise the items will go to charity. It would break her mother's heart for that to happen. CHRIS' MOTHER was not asked. I'm just wondering if Chris' daughter has the phone number for her Grandmother. I do not have anyones phone number or email address. That is why I am writing here where I know everyone looks for news. Chris' name is also on this site. Look at the original post where Carl refers to Christina. This is why I am posting this message here.

  • The jury did not reach a decision today. The jury decided to report at 10 AM Friday (tomorrow).

I don't see how anyone would know the breakdown of the jury except for members of the jury.

Esparza's lawyer requested $250,000 so it's hard to imagine the jury is comtemplating a higher amount.

I expect the jury is still wrangling about who is responsible for what. I'm guessing once they develop a consensus on these points the negotiations for the amount will happen quickly.

  • I deleted an anonymous comment. Please post under a pseudonym.

I was not in court when the Esparza relatives testified, but if one of them said she talked to Christina Nowakowski I expect the defense would have mentioned this in the closing argument.

Moore's attorney invested much of his close on raising doubts about Christina Nowakowski. He definitely would have mentioned if one of Esparza's witnesses said she'd talked to her.

  • Carl deletes comments if they are the truth.

    He likes drama, not normalcy.

  • I delete comments made as "anonymous" without a pseudonym because they are confusing if more than one person is "anonymous".

But I've also declared a one week moratorium on Esparza-Nowakowski drama because I'm sick of it.

  • Chris My Love,

I'd like to let you know that all of our friends came though for us. They worked very hard and quietly put the word out not to vote for Gene Moore and to support Karen Yarbrough. They were successful in getting Yarbrough the 4,000 votes she needed. Moore has done everything to hurt our family, and because of that, he is no longer the committeeman of Proviso Township. I promised you 4 years ago this would happen, and I make this promise to you now; The wheel will turn full circle next year. For everyone that was involved with hurting our family with their lies and fabricated stories; it will all end in the next primary election. I've been meeting with all our friends downtown and they are very supportive of our family, and are very disappointed in the path that Moore and his cohorts have chosen, by turning the political arena into his own personal vendetta. Everything is okay,
It's time to plant your garden, Spring is here.

    All My Love,
    Paul
