M06, January 13 Rep. Calvin Giles fundraiser [4th Sen]

I attended the fundraiser at the invitation of James T. Smith. Smith is challenging Sen. Kimberly Lightford in the Dem Primary. Giles invited Smith.

Observations:

1. Giles kicked Smith in the teeth by endorsing Lightford at the event. Smith said he would have appreciated a phone call instead of being dissed with his wife there.
2. Former Alderman Percy Giles got the biggest intro from Calvin. OK. I can accept that. But then Percy Giles said his proudest moment was appointing Calvin to the state legislature. Percy wasn't proud of doing something for the community, but for getting a job for his nephew.

6 Comments:

  • Yesterday Smith told me he is not continuing the nominating petition challenge against Lightford.

And Smith apparently has one more hearing Monday, but Smith should "officially" be on the ballot after the hearing.

  • Good for Jimmy. He might not be able to mount the forces he needs to can Lightford but I hope he exposes the chess cat for what she is--fluff, pomp & circumstance, and light in the information department. Thank God we have Harmon in Oak Park.

  • This is directed to the OakParker weighing in...Senator Lightford has done a phenomenal job, while serving in the General Assembly. A chess cat? It's apparent you are bitter about some things, but it's ok...no one cares! FYI, Senator Lightford represents half of the City of Oak Park as well. It is obvious you are not politically inclined.

  • James T. Smith has done more "real" work for poor families on the west side of Chicago than any of it's elected office holders in the last 20 years. He has sent loads of our children to college, taken in his care 1000's of school age children (some being the very children of kids he helped when they where younger) with his after school and summer programs. Sometimes without pay!

Programs that do better for our children that the parks and YMCA's have been able to do and has been an active voice of change for community, and education. He has a heart for people and not politics. This is what is going to make him stand out the election. I just hope these jerks don't break his heart the way Giles did! And to think he ran against this guy two years ago he should have known not to trust him.

  • I'll bite. What has Lightford done that's been noteworthy?

Isn't it a tad strange that she has a low quality working relationship with both her state reps?
