POL, Santiago's contract extended through school board elections [D209]

At Monday's meeting of the District 209 (Proviso Township High Schools) board of education the contract of Jose Santiago was extended from February, 2007 until May.

Who is Santiago? According to the Forest Park Review (Seth Stern) he's the one who supervises the District 209 janitors doing political work.
Typically, he said, workers are given the campaign literature that they’ll be distributing on Thursday and Fridays by Director of Facilities Jose Santiago, who was himself once investigated by former Superintendent Greg Jackson for campaigning on school grounds during Welch’s last school board race.

Could it be that Santiago was extended through May, instead of the end of the school year, because he's being kept on payroll to do political work?

[UPDATE: I got this one wrong, I think. As I now understand it, the agenda distributed in advance had Santiago's contract being extended to May, but the board changed it at Monday's meeting. The motion passed reflected the original February retirement date. If Santiago leaves in February will this cut into Welch's ability to enforce political discipline with the janitors?]

  • Santiago is a professional sign distributor. How is this guy making $90,000 a year with a 5th grade education? Welch is stupid. Where's the feds? His contract was entended to June 07. He is not leaving in February. Get your facts straight. Hey Welch, can I help with the candidates that you are supporting so I can get a high paying job that I am not qualified for?

  • Well if they aint up to old tricks. Extend the contract until the next election cycle. well if you all can remember from the past when Manzo and crew extended the patronage contracts, they were all "void" NO GOOD. Welch you know that you cant extend the contract of theat employee during an election cycle. If the new elected board does not want to keep that at will employee you cant force them to keep him with a bogus contract. Come on welch, stop playin games. Tony has been your good old boy long enough. He has taken care of your house for you in hillside when your air went out. remember when you got your air fixed. (Who did the work Chris)? and how much did you pay for it? Hmmmmmm...how things come back to bite you square in the ass. how many sd209 janiotrs did work for you at your house for free. just a promise to keep them employeed/ Well hurry up and come into Club FED.Dont worry Mrs. Kelly any contract extended from now until the election will be declared invalid by any court of law. Dont worry........

  • Your update is wrong. In fact, Welch duped the board minority again. Santiago is set to officially retire June 30, 2007. This is shown in the May 16, 2005 board minutes. On Monday, January 22, 2007, Santiago attempted to leave a month earlier because he has a new job a Medinah Country Club. Santiago is a former golf caddie for Chi Chi Rodriguez, and he wants to spend the rest of his working life working at the famous golf club. However, the board minority hates him and Welch so much they thought him and Welch were pulling another fast one. This time the jokes on them.

  • Santiago was very good to Welch. He not only worked very hard on his campaigns and gave huge cash donations, he also had proviso janitors working in his home. Welch went as far as installing a sprinkler system at his new home and giving the same company a $10,000 contract to repair the sprinkler system at PMSA in August or September 06. Welch is a crook!

  • Does anyone know what the hell Joe Birdie is doin in sd88? what the hell is his job? why is a union member doin his work? Is the union in his pocket from Stone Park? Why is the union allowing a union member to do supervisory work for no pay? Do your job Birdie or is it that you are not qualified to do it so you pass it on to others so you can sit in your office and shine your Prince Boots.
