N06, replacing John Stroger on the ballot

According the Alderman William Beavers Cook County Board President John Stroger wants his son Todd to replace him on the ballot in November.
Sun-Times (Deanda Bellandi, AP):
"President Stroger is not resigning from his position as president of the county board. He intends to serve out his term," said Beavers, who spoke with Stroger on Sunday. Stroger's term ends in December.

A letter outlining the plan could be delivered as soon as Wednesday to Democratic party officials, Beavers said. Party officials will then decide whether to put Todd Stroger or another candidate on the ballot.

Why is this statement being made through a third party? Why isn't Stroger making it? What are the odds Beavers is claiming Stroger is saying things that he isn't really saying?

  • Carl,

I suppose it would not be necessarily beneficial to President John Stroger's recovery efforts to face the glaring lights and microphones of the media. They would be relentlessly asking redundant questions and no answer he gave them would be sufficient. Ald. Beavers is a trusted associate of John Stroger. Beavers is an elder statesman of the Chicago Democratic Party. It's a logical choice for him to be the spokesman. It is ridiculous to even think that Ald. Beavers would make up something and say that Stroger said it.

  • Stroger is paralyzed by his stroke. The family and friends are trying to save some power from the situation.

  • County government is close to the crisis stage in so many areas and all many seem to care about is putting in this "young pup" to preserve somebody's vested interests in carrying on the corruption and inefficiencies of Chicago city government, now at the jury decision level, where actually considering who could run the county in a efficient manner, is at the bottom of priorities.

  • They have only been reports that Stroger is paralyzed on his left side. The Strogers have been so loyal to the Democratic Party over the years. It should be expected that they would like to treated as would a Daley, Hynes, or Madigan. I predict that Todd Stroger will trounce Tony Peraica in the November election. Peraica has softened his style lately, but I saw him on WTTW Channel 11 Chicago Tonight program this evening and he had the nerve to say that a Cook County Commissioner's job is tougher than being a Chicago Alderman. Even Claypool had to admit that an Alderman's job is much harder.

  • Hey Guru, why don't you go to China or a communist country,if you think what the board is doing is ok ???
Hey Guru, why don't you read American Histroy or our Constitution and see what we in America stand for!! No wonder the Democratic Party can't Presidential elections, it's all about corruption and favoritism!!
Hey Guru, where would you rather pay your taxes at, DuPage or Cook County ???
Hey Guru, if your such a Guru, why not keep the status quo at Proviso 209,district 89 and 88, and keep Gene Moore as Democratic Committeeman ?

  • guru get real,

First of all, the board is not doing anything. Do you need me to give you a refresher on what is going on? It is amazing how we all profess to love democracy, but now that the well established processess of democracy are taking place all of a sudden this is such a travesty! You are a hypocrite. Democracy is fine as long as things go your way. They are 80 Committemen in Cook County who are ELECTED by the voters of Cook County as their political representatives. When a party nominee, Democrat or Republican, is unable to finish a term or make it to the General Election, it is the respective committemen's JOB to VOTE to choose a member of their party to finish the term or race whichever is the case. That's our democracy! Guess what, the voters will have to vote in November for either Tony Peraica (Republican) and whomever the Democratic Committeemen choose to be their party's nominee for Cook County Board President. They have to do this by LAW! If they so choose Todd Stroger, that's their prerogative. He happens to have more experience than Forest Claypool and Tony Peraica put together. You fair weather democracy lovers apparently don't base your rants on facts. The only thing that's wrong is that you don't like the choice. Get over it! You have a right not to like the choice, but to somehow say that the established rules are Un-American is total nonsense. You same people who claim that this is so unfair probably would have no problem if the chosen cadidate was Forrest Claypool or Bobbi Steele or Danny Davis or John Daley, now would you? It's all about stopping Todd Stroger. Why? Because he's his father son. He has been a loyal Democrat. He has been a model elected official. So what he doesn't holler and scream in order to get things done. He knows how to work within the system. His constituents have consistently re-elected him. It bothers me when a person does the right things and has to sit in their powerful parent's shadow it's conceived as being weak. When did having class and respect for others become such a negative quality. You can't be a Chicago Alderman and be weak. Those are the most pressure cooker jobs in this state outside of Mayor of Chicago. I'm a Democrat and will more than likely support whomever the party choose to run against Peraica. So if it is Todd Stroger, then so be it. It has to be somebody, and he has paid his dues just like many others. Now as far as your comment regarding the Proviso Democratic Committeeman, I think that Rep. Yarbrough has a bright future. She will have great influence on the makeup of the various school districts in Proviso Township if she so chooses.

  • Last night I was channel surfing and I came upon an episode of The Twilight Zone called The Obsolete Man. As I watched the episode, which stars Burgess Meredith, I began to reflect on what’s hapening in Cook County, with the Strogers,Daleys and the complict media and Cook County Democratic and Republican Party. If Serling was doing the show about Cook County goverment it would go like this:
“You walk into this room at your own risk, because it leads to the future, not a future that will be but one that might be. This is not a new world, it is simply an extension of what began in the old one. It has patterned itself after every dictator who has ever planted the ripping imprint of a boot on the pages of history since the beginning of time. It has refinements, technological advances, and a more sophisticated approach to the destruction of human freedom. But like every one of the superstates that preceded it, it has one iron rule: logic is an enemy and truth is a menace. This is Commissioner Tony Peraica in his last forty-eight hours on Earth. He’s a citizen of the Cook County but will soon have to be eliminated, because he is built out of flesh and because he has a mind. Commissioner Peraica, who will draw his last breaths in the Twilight Zone.”
In the world of the future, the harsh and ultra-repressive State controls all aspects of human life. All religion is banned and ownership of a book is punishable by death. But still there are those who will not conform to tyranny. One such man is Tony Peraica, a God-fearing American and Cook County Commissioner who has been judged “obsolete” by the Cook County Democratic Party Bosses and the media and there brain washed voters, who vote as told.
He is sentenced to die. Peraica is permitted to choose the manner of his own death, which will be televised to the populace as a lesson and a warning. The method of “liquidation” will be a secret known only to Commissioner Peraica and his executioner.
An hour before the appointed time, Commissioner Peraica invites the leaders of the Democratic Party of Cook County to his apartment to witness the execution. Once inside,Commissioner Peraica locks the door.
Commissioner Peraica tells the Democratic Leadership(Mayor Daley,Stroger and Madigan) that he instructed the executioner to place a bomb in his apartment, full of his beloved books, and that it’s set to go off at midnight. He explains to them that now they too, will die at midnight. Commissioner Peraica begins to read a bible (a crime punishable by death). He shows the Democratic party leader Bosses and the county, watching on TV, how a spiritual and strong man faces death. Commissioner Peraica will prove whose will is stronger, his or the State’s. The Democratic Leader Bosses are calm at first, but as the minutes tick by they begin to panic. The Democratic Bosses of Cook County finally cry out, “In the name of God, let me out!” Commissioner Peraica hands them the keys, and the Democratic Party bosses run from the room just as it explodes.
The final scene shows the Democratic Bosses(Daley,Madigan and Stroger), now on trial themselves for being obsolete.
The final narration sums up the episode nicely:
“The Democratic Bosses of Cook County - the late Bosses - were only partly correct. They were obsolete. But so was the State and Cook County, the entity they worshipped. Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of man, that state is obsolete. A case to be filed under ‘M’ for mankind in the Twilight Zone.”

  • I was today downtown in the county building when I saw the spectacle of all spectacles, Todd Stroger, along with Alderman beavers and a large group of Politicians in action along with reporters following them.
Part of that group with Storger was Eugene Moore and Chris Welch, as well as what appeared to be bodyguards from the Nation of Islam.
I asked Mr. Moore why he was'nt supporting Danny Davis or Bobbie Steele, and he stated "Danny who","Bobbie who", and finally I asked him what he thought Karen Yarbrough would do with her weighted vote from Proviso as the Democratic committeeman, and he turned redder than a tomato, and asked his bodyguards to remove me from there area.I guess that question was a sore subject for Moore. Also, Welch appeared extremely happy and was very cordial. He seems to have a very close relationship with both Beavers and Todd Stroger, and was talking in private in what appeared to be stragedy meeting with numerous Alderman's. I wonder what they were talking about ?
