N06, Bobbie Steele beaten like a crack baby in foster care
Sun-Times (Fran Spielman):
The Capitol Fax Blog has a round-up of commentary from the Sun-Times, Trib and Mary Mitchell.
County Commissioner Bobbie Steele is a hack who cares little government efficiency and providing quality services. She’ll play the race card to get Black voters to toe-the-line even when reform would improve services for those same Black voters.
But Steele is getting treated unfairly by Ald. William Beavers and the rest of the Stroger machine. Beavers is attacking Steele for being too ambitious and jockeying to become County Board President.
Let’s look at this through the prism of insiders and outsiders. Beavers and Ald. Todd Stroger, the insiders, have been privately jockeying to advance their careers behind the scenes while piously pledging all sorts of bullshit and lies about hoping John Stroger will return to his duties as County Board President.
Beavers and Todd Stroger could do this because they controlled the information about John Stroger’s health. And they were the ones who declared what was and wasn’t appropriate. “Silly Bobbie, our jockeying for power is appropriate; your jockeying for power proves you are not ‘the one’.”
Any claims that the South Side Black Democrats would have treated the Westside Blacks any better if Westsiders behaved with more reverence for the Stroger family is bullshit. Bill Beavers and Todd Stroger were going to take care of themselves, their blood family and then their political organizations. There never was going to be any crumbs for the Westsiders under the Beavers/T. Stroger plan.
In some ways Bobbie Steele, the outsider, is the perfect person to play the chump for the Westside. Steele lacks intellect or political savvy making it easy for the Beavers/T. Stroger team to put her on the defensive.
Beavers and T. Stroger may have beaten Steele like a crack baby in foster care, but the Beavers/Stroger couldn’t treat Ald. Ed Smith or Congressman Danny Davis like they have treated Steele. Smith and Davis avoided the trap by being astute enough to see the game was stacked in favor of the Southsiders—at least at this point.
But if Beavers fails to deliver the Democratic committeeman votes he claims to have (but probably doesn’t) look for a Westsider to emerge as the candidate to replace John Stroger on the ballot. And when a Westsider emerges as a serious candidate, it won’t be Bobbie Steele.
The complex political deal calls for [Alderman William] Beavers, powerful chairman of the City Council's Budget Committee, to replace John Stroger as county commissioner and for Todd Stroger to replace his father as president of the board, where he would have no vote. Until the election, John Stroger would remain in office. If Beavers wins the seat, he would resign as 7th Ward alderman on the condition that Mayor Daley appoint his daughter to replace him....
Beavers, 71, has long made known his desire to retire and install his daughter--now his chief of staff--as his successor.

BTW, I'm sick of the claim that somehow Todd Stroger is entitled to inherit office just like Daley, Lisa Madigan, etc.
I didn't support any of those Irish or Polish pols bequeathing jobs to their progeny either.
But with the exception of Lipinski, all of them won their elections on the up-and-up.
The Stroger camp hasn't told the truth about John Stroger's health. The lying combined with the political bluffing, strong-arming and cynically using Stroger's health as a weapon against rivals has left the Beavers/Stroger team discredited.

To Guru, "he earned the right ot recommend whomever he likes to carry out his vision"? Are you smoking Crack or using Smack intervenously ?
Storger won the election, yes, eventhough he had a serious stroke, and no one knew his condition. What that says to me is that the voters who voted for him did so out of the color of his skin, not for the right reasons. Now that he won and it has been 4 months and he has yet to be seen or heard, how can we know for sure he is of right mind and has the insight or judgment to "annoint his successor"!!
I am embarrassed by the spectacle the black community/leaders are doing with Stroger and the greed and blatant disregard they are showing to the rest of the community. That position of Board President and Democratic nominee for the Board President, should be opened up and a special primary should be done to elect another Deocrat to take on the Republican in November. Or, chose a crediable canididate, such as Dorothy Brown ?
Read American History with similar occurences occured and remember Woodward Wilson, who was pratically dead, and his wife and chief of staff ran the country for almost two years. How about the Duvalier's of Haiti??
African-Americans are smarter than this, and are tired of being made to look as petty, stupid and ignorant by these two bit hustlers, acting as polticians.
Both Beavers and Todd Stroger, along with there supporters are only doing the bidding for there white masters, and they sure can dance!!!

Until an independent source evaluates Stroger and reports to the people who pay his salary, I'm gonna assume Beavers and Little Todd are saying whatever they think will advance their ambitions.
What is the evidence the Sun-Times or Trib got it wrong on Stroger? Did they print retractions?
If Claypool was incommunicado indefinitely, he would have been replaced on the ballot and I'd have no problem with this.
Would John Stroger have won his election if his family had told the truth about his health condition?
The fact that they lied suggests they didn't think he would win.

Sounds like the house negroes of the left don't like it when a brotha leaves or questions the Plantation. Beavers and Todd Stroger, along with Daley are content to sit back collecting handouts while doing nothing for blacks residents as well as other residents but complain about their condition. Simple Sambo doesn't realize that his blind loyalty and reliance on handouts from one party have crippled him and his race.
But not a peep from the Black Left as long as the handouts keep coming... Reminds me of the scene in Hollywood Shuffle where a group of slaves are attempting to escape the plantation. The house negro proclaims, "I don't know why we leavin'; Massa always been good to us. He feeds us on Monday, clothes us on Tuesday, beats us on Wednesday....or is it Thursday?"
The Democrats can always abuse the house negro because they keep the handouts coming to the right people.
Of course, the "Public Policies" are the same feel-good BS handouts and set-asides that have relegated Black folks to second-class status.
The Best thing the blacks can do for themselves is vote for Peraica, then the Dems would be forced to reflect on the fact that some Black folks are no longer willing to play the whore.
Damn right, and it's about time the dems were exposed for what they are: the true slave masters.

Hey Bobbie Steele reminds of Theresa Kelly. They both think they should be board president!
They both should be board president of there respective nursing homes!!
Both Steele and Kelly are political hacks!!
Imagine both of these ladies running against each other.Pure theater of do nothing hacks!!

The Kennedys, Bush, Daley, Hynes, Laurino, Lipinski, Madigan, Mell, ecetera, ecetera....FINE
Stroger....BLASPHEMY!
No wonder even in 2006 Chicagoland is the most segregated metropolis in the good ole' USA.

Perica will win the election and I am a democrat. black folks will mess this up. Westside versus Southside pols. Perica wins with hmmmmmmmmmmm, 52% of the votes.

Down with the machine!!!!!
By Anonymous, at 11:28 PM, June 29, 2006
The family did not say Stroger had a "serious stroke" before the primary. They certainly did everything possible to create the impression he could be back to work in a short period of time.
By Carl Nyberg, at 10:42 AM, June 30, 2006
Let's go back in time.
What did the Sun-Times report on March 15?
Unable to walk, slightly disoriented and slurring his speech, the 76-year-old was alert Tuesday evening but will likely spend the final days of the campaign in a hospital bed....
Hmm... Not exactly the same as saying Stroger has a "serious" stroke.
Here's another Sun-Times nugget:
Simon described Stroger’s demeanor on Friday as drowsy but responsive. He spoke in some short phrases, including a “thank you” to his niece for visiting, according to Simon.
I think the family knew from before the primary there was zero chance Stroger would return to his job.
I think the claims Stroger was asking questions and was responsive was outright embellishments.
If Stroger was as healthy as his family described, he must have had another stroke since the election.
By Carl Nyberg, at 11:55 AM, June 30, 2006
I suspect the doctors told the family the truth. Absent a miracle John Stroger will never be able to work again.
The family passed along self-serving bullshit. While attacking people who asked relevant questions.
By Carl Nyberg, at 11:57 AM, June 30, 2006
If Stroger was merely "slightly disoriented", as claimed by his family, he's be on the phone making deals and meeting with people.
The explanation that's the simplest is that Stroger's family has deceived the public from the beginning.

Hey Carl,I recieved an e-mail today from a friend in NYC requestingthat I participate in this event , as well others. As we are fast approaching Independence Day, I thought I should inform your bloggers about something very special being done for the victims of 9/11.
The fifth anniversary of the September 11 attacks is fast approaching and it's hard to believe it has already been almost five years since that unfortunate day in our history. It's a date none of us look forward to, but a date that we should all remember, if only to keep the lives those who perished and their families in our thoughts and hearts.
Im sure there will be many special homages that day. Special observations, moments of silence and tributes will be held around the country, around the world and elsewhere..
With that in mind, I thought let you all know about a very special tribute that will be held this year on September 11. A tribute which I have already pledged to participate and which I hope you guys out there with blogs - or without - might want to join and support. I found out about it via Ken at It Comes in Pints? and I think it may be perhaps the best way we can all honor the victims of the terrorist attacks: by honoring their lives: 2,996 stories…2,996 voices…2,996 remembered…
2,996 is a tribute to the victims of 9/11.
On September 11, 2006, 2,996 volunteer bloggers will join together for a tribute to the victims of 9/11. Each person will pay tribute to a single victim.
We will honor them by remembering their lives, and not by remembering their murderers.
If you would like to help out, either by pledging to post a tribute on your own blog, or by offering your services to promote this cause.
Then, on 9/11/2006, you will post a tribute to that victim on your blog.
But, and this is critical, the tributes should celebrate the lives of these people–kind of like a wake. Over the last 5 years we’ve heard the names of the killers, and all about the victim’s deaths. This is a chance to learn about and celebrate those who died. Forget the murderers, they don’t deserve to be remembered. But some people who died that day deserve to be remembered–2,996 people.
I will be paying tribute to George C. Merino, American of Cuban descent, 39 years young, who died at the World Trade Center.
Please consider participating in the 2,996 September 11 tribute. It wont be easy and it will undoubtedly be heartbreaking and painful. But it's important to let the families of the victims as well as the rest of the world know that those who perished on that day will never be forgotten. Their deaths touched all of our lives.
If you need a little impetus, I suggest you visit the September 11th Victims site and read through some of the comments from loved ones and perfect strangers posted for each individual who lost his or her life on 9/11.
Thanks.God Bless America!!

CHRIS WELCH SHOULD BE THE COUNTY BOARD PRESIDENT
By Anonymous, at 7:29 PM, June 30, 2006
Danny Davis has put on the gloves. Bobbi Steele is vowing not to give up. Todd Stroger has the support.
When will these black politicians wake up! Why put on this public fight. Everyone, even you or I, has a right to seek to be President. But doesn't it make our leaders look foolish when they fight each other in public like that. They should all figure out who has the support and then unite behind that person. Unfortunately, only one person can hold the position. Personally, I think they are all ok. But Karen Yarbrough would have been my choice. She's smart, savvy, and knows how to treat people.
By Anonymous, at 8:49 AM, July 01, 2006
The whole thing about John Stroger's stroke is moot, because this situation probably would have happened regardless of his capactiy to serve. He certainly had no intention of serving out this term, and I'm not convinced he even intended to remain on the ballot. He was definitely going to pull a "Lipinski" after the primary.
By Anonymous, at 9:54 PM, July 02, 2006
I think they toyed with us. The Stroger Camp made their announcement right after the deadline. How convenient. Hmm...
By Cynthia, at 3:23 PM, July 05, 2006
All of this talk about Stroger waiting until the deadline for an independent to file is hogwash. All of these wannabes knew or should have known of the deadline. If they knew and didn't act, then whose fault is it. If they didn't know, then they're too dumb to run for dog catcher. The election calendar is public info posted on the election board's website. It's pitiful to blame Stroger for other peoples ineptness.

Caper:
If you want DD then fine so be it. But don't talk about you don't want a novice. Todd Stroger isn't a novice politicican. He's been an elected official for a long time. No, not as long as DD, but so what. We need DD's vocie in Congress. Stroger has the experience plus youth, that's a hard combination to match. I know people say that it's nepotism, but where were these critics when Hynes recommended his son for the party's endorsement, Madigan his daughter, Lipinski his son, Old man Daley his son for State Senator. There is plenty of precedent. Why all the tremendous fuss now. Why don't we admit this and just call a spade a spade.
By Anonymous, at 2:25 AM, July 09, 2006
dollar bill, be serious.
How can you suggest the team of "Beevis and Butthead" be considered seriously up against DD?
Todd is a decent fellow but not a leader and that is what is needed in Cook County. Beevis (beavers) is one crass, ignorant old guard fellow who's type needs to go the way of the buffalo.
Lisa Madigan was an impressive senator and now ag.
Dan Hynes does an admirable job as treasurer, now the Lipinski "shoo in" was for shit.
Daley did a good job in his previous elected position.
what can you point to that suggests Todd has done in either position that anyone would put forth his name for President?
Name one piece of legislation, one ordinance, anything, anything at all that Stroger the younger has promoted, fought for or got done on behalf of anybody?
Nothing. he's done nothing and that's what he will do in the president's seat.
but, that's not what this is about. it's pure politics and keeping the status quo.
By Anonymous, at 9:55 PM, July 10, 2006
keep the status quo:
I don't have to name anything for you until you know what you're talking about. Dan Hynes is the state comptroller, not treasurer. Your girl, Judy Topinka, is the treasurer. And as far as you claiming that Daley did a good job in his previous positions. Are you on something? Hello? Are you following the John Burge case? Guess who was the Cook County State's Attorney who prosecuted many falsely accused black men. That's right, Richard M. Daley. He has the blood and life of innocent men on his hand. As a State Senator, do you think he did anything meaningful but receive the help of his powerful father. Do your homework youngsta before you come to class, Mr. "status quo."
By Anonymous, at 2:44 AM, July 11, 2006
So I made a mistake about Hynes still he is a good comptroller.
What has Butthead done? Nothing. Just has the name Stroger. I wasn't a real big fan of his daddy but at least he is a stand up man. Tony will eat him alive. And while Cook County burns, Beevis will dance.
Business as usual in the cesspool of politics.
By Anonymous, at 10:56 PM, July 11, 2006
Status quo:
For your info, Alderman Stroger has passed both state legislation and city ordinances. That's what you do in a legislative body of government. He's sponsored and passed way more bills/ordinances than Commissioner Peraica can conjure up in a dream. What has Peraica done other than be an obstructionists on the Cook County Board. From day 1, he's only been contrary and never even tried to use his position to sincerely serve the residents of Cook County. It's all been about railing against President Stroger to further his own political agenda. Now before he even completes 1 term in office he's running for President. Give me a break! His intent has always been to move up and never was to sincerely serve the residents. At least Alderman Stroger has paid his dues and done the grunt work of serving the public while having to stay in the shadows of his dad. In today's age, there are so many children who waste the opportunities afforded them by their upbringing and are not in a position to benefit from the help of a parent. It's commendable that Alderman Stroger has been humble, respectful, and smart. It's honorable that he would want to follow in his father's footsteps. Too bad Peraica's son isn't doing the same thing, but that hasn't the Commissioner for trying to help him, has it?
By Anonymous, at 9:14 AM, July 12, 2006
Todd Stroger has NO cook county board experience.
Todd Stroger was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, and he has earned nothing. Everything has been handed to him.
Cook County is in a financial crises, and does not have time for on the job training.
The Stroger and Lipinski moves just show how little respect cook county politicians have for residents and taxpayers
