MEDIA, Dwyer vs. Calderone [FP]

Bill Dwyer (Forest Park Review) wrote a column critical of Mayor Anthony Calderone.
The Tony Principle holds that "In an outmoded form of governance with an uncritical board majority headed by a clueless power monger, that clueless power monger tends to assume responsibilities for which he has no qualifications."...

Some would argue that over reaching by elected officials can be controlled with a few simple checks and balances. But the majority of our elected officials—i.e., Commissioners Tim Gillian and Mark Hosty— aren’t willing to provide those checks and balances. In fact, the majority of this board has already shown the willingness to allow Calderone unfettered say over who gets hired as part time cops in this village. So why should they question him taking the reigns when it comes to negotiating a settlement with a wrongly suspended police officer?

In today's FPR Mayor Calderone responds.
In that article, Bill goes on to attack my character directly by implying that I have reached the "Peter" principle, most likely because he was denied access to private and confidential employee information....

Calderone liberally plays the Oak Park vs. Forest Park card.

  • I find it interesting how Tony Calderone has led the renaissance of Forest Park and Dwyer and the Forest Park Review can only focus on silly things. Is there a leader in this town, other than the Probe's sponsor Karen Yarborough, that the Probe and the Review think is doing a good job? Has anyone at the Probe or the Review tried to be a leader? Probably not. I applaud Tony Calderone and encourage him to keep on keepin on. It's because of Calderone, Hosty and Gillian that Forest Park is back on the map.

  • Hey Forest Park Sam. Are you aware of all the trips, "mini-vacations," that 209 Board Member Theresa Kelly has taking at tax payer expense? At last count, she is over 26 trips that include trips to San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., New York, North Carolina, Atlanta, New Orleans, and many many more. Also, Are you aware of all the personal items she buys on these trips that were billed to district credits cards? She has expensive art work hanging in her house paid for by taxpayers. Also, Auditors in 209 have found that Theresa Kelly, Greg Jackson and Kelvin Gilchrist routinely ate lavish meals without proper billing detail at taxpayer expense. Also, a recent state audit has found that grant monies at 209 are routinely misspent by the Director of State and Federal Programs on lavish meals...See a pattern. And recently, at a special meeting of the 209 Board, Theresa Kelly vehemently opposed new board policies designed to crack down on all this misspending. Should the Feds be looking at her? As a matter of fact, she is close friends to Tony Calderone and many of those in Harvey.

  • 209 sucks like forest park, I agree, Ms. Kelly needs to go far away from 209 as possible. She has used her so called"retirement" as an excuse to travel to all these school meetings for her personal vacation. She yells,"I brought 7.5 million back to the school", but yet she can't see the hypocrisy of her words and actions when she states the school is broke. She reminds me of those degenerate gamblers, who continue playing and spending all there money because they once won big at the roulette table!
26 trips! How much money did she spend?Dinners with Greg Jackson on our dime?Did'nt Greg Jackson backstab our first black Superindentent Eric Eversly, who was from Harvard? Has Kelly stopped using the cell phone?
When is Kelly going to read the writing on the wall and step down for the good of her community and for herself?Yarbrough should have the courage to tell her, to please step down, and to move on, and let new faces with new freash ideas take her place, because the community deserves a chance to succeed after the Welch and Kelly debacle at 209!

  • fan of tony, have you ever written a letter to the Forest Park Review that the paper refused to publish?

Proviso Probe has been set to liberally allow comments. If you think someone isn't getting a fair shake, you are free to make your case.

But the carping "my team isn't getting fair coverage" is a bunch of bullshit and you know it.

You're trying to borrow a page from the Right Wing at the national level. The Right has complained about unfair treatment so much the media has been browbeat into censoring themselves.

I let everyone have his or her say within highly permissive limits. If you want to make the case that I should cover some story, make the case. If you want to make the case I gave unfair coverage to someone or some incident, make the case. If you want to make the case I'm prioritizing the trivial over the important, make the case.

But general whining isn't going to persuade me of anything except that you're a whiner.

  • Harkmosty, I wonder if you can provide us with just one example of someone Calderone gave a job too. Proof would be simple enough.

    Can Carl even do this?

Watchingand waiting could aslo do a a favor with providing proof. The acusations are plausable but where's the proof.

Are you the same person that posts on forestparkconsiracy.com?

This all sounds like bullshit to me.

  • u got 2b, maybe I'm confused, but are you asking me to back up something I wrote?

If so, what claim did I make that needs to be supported in your eyes?

By Blogger Carl Nyberg, at 12:07 PM, June 01, 2006

  • I'm wondering if harkmosty can give specific examples with names of those that Calderone hired.

    Did he hire the world?

Did he hire 1 or 2 or 10 people?

And remember to provide the proof.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 5:35 PM, June 01, 2006

  • Still waiting for the proof.

    Harkmosty waiting on you.

Waiting and watching waiting on you.

    Proof, proof, proof.

  • U got to be kidding:

For starters, a name is given. Also, an allegation that phony interviews for the investigator job that this Chris person supposedly got. So now, the ball is in your court to counter that scenario.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 9:11 PM, June 02, 2006

  • This is no proof and you know it. This sounds like bullshit.

Maybe Daley gave them the job.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 9:50 PM, June 02, 2006

  • U got 2 to b kidding, who in Forest Park is known as the Angry, drunk, midget dwarf? Is it Tony"I'm a Soprano"Caldrone or is it Tim"I can make a better decision when I'm drunk" Gillian?

  • Hey kama kazi's which one of you want to be the first idiot to stand up and say I am the moron?

I asked for proof because I don't know Sinese or Shorner that's why I asked imbicille.

So far all you have done is throw names out likes jackassess.

What the hell kind of proof is this.

And speaking of hard working employees correct me if I'm wrong was it Harder who called in sick when he was not? Oh I know that's OK because he's a Hard er worker, give me a break. If someone calls in sick they should be sick period the end, no games no bullshit no excuses, be sick or on your way to a doctor or on the way to a pharmacy. Imbicille, yep you summed it up.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:33 AM, June 03, 2006

Just another imbicille comment from dwarf little minds of insurgent idiots.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:36 AM, June 03, 2006

  • Who care about all this rhetoric. I won't vote for Calderone. Whatever I say won't matter to the few a$$kissers. I think he's a crook, end of story. I don't like the way he squirms out of every important issue in Forest Park - like the Roos building. I sly remarks are reminders that politicians are arrogant. The fact that he has someone else writes his letters is a joke. (I'm sure storino is getting tired of it).

Those that continue to speak kindly of C have an agenda. Please let me know when he is contacted by the IRS or the FBI - Carl will you do a follow up? I hope so!!

Dwyer I loved your article - humor and truth!!!

  • Great Article about Maureen Murphy, who happens to be very, very, good friends with Calderone and Gillian, and Calderone's favorite Lobbyist Tom Walsh and Jim Perelli,as well as with Don Sloan and Chris Welch and Eugene More and Ron Serpico. Sleeping with the enemy

    Sunday, June 4, 2006

    Dear citizen,

Please run for office. You'll spend many evenings away from your family knocking on doors and begging for money, and the party won't be able to help you. Now go get 'em. Good luck.

    Sincerely,

    The Cook County GOP

Maureen Murphy, Worth Township Republican committeeman, admits she has a hard time recruiting candidates for office. In Democratically controlled Cook County, asking a GOP constituent to run against an incumbent Democrat is "asking them to fall on a sword," she said.

So a half-dozen state House and Senate Democrats from the Southland (Kevin Joyce, Jim Brosnahan and Kevin McCarthy, to name a few) will go unchallenged in the November election. Murphy and Orland Township Republican Committeeman Liz Gorman could not, or did not, put much effort into fielding candidates.

    What's the point?

"If we not going to be able to give them resources, and knowing you are putting your reputation and your family on the line and it's not a targeted race, I think we should be more practical in where we fill vacancies and where we put our resources," Murphy said.

The Democrats drew the legislative map that virtually guarantees Democratic representation until at least 2010.

But a voter from Palos Park named Bob Shelstrom decided he would be willing to run on the GOP ticket, if only to give voters a choice. He left his polling place during the March primary disheartened by all the blank spaces on the ballot.

He soon realized party leaders weren't all that serious about filling the slots. Calls to Murphy went unanswered. His own newly elected committeeman in Palos Township, Lee Roupas, agreed to host on May 13 a slating meeting to fill positions.

Roupas notified fellow committeemen, including Murphy, but she couldn't make the meeting and, frankly, didn't seem interested, according to Shelstrom.

So with only a few committeemen present, Shelstrom became the Republican candidate for the 18th Senate District, a seat held by state Sen. Ed Maloney (D-Chicago).

When Murphy learned of the slating, she was perturbed. She already had a candidate in mind, she says, named Myrna Jurcev, who has been active in Oak Lawn tax issues.

Murphy scrambled to slate Myrna through a "gentleman's agreement," but the Illinois State Board of Elections disqualified her. The board advised Murphy to formally object to Shelstrom in order to start the clock again on the slating process.

So, strange as it seems, Murphy, a Republican committeeman, is listed on the state board's Web site as objecting to one of the only GOP candidates in the Southland running for the Statehouse.

"It was an 'oops.' Because of mixed signals, two different people were filed because there wasn't a quorum at the May 13 meeting," Murphy said. "We filed for Myrna, but Shelstrom filed, and so now I don't know. This has never happened before."

One of them will be the official candidate, she said.

Shelstrom's question is this: If he had not expressed an interest, would Murphy have filed anyone? Or would Maloney stand unopposed, just like the other Democrats?

"(Murphy) had all that time to find somebody, but she couldn't find someone until I filed," Shelstrom said. "Within a week, she pops up with somebody."

Had she and other committeemen moved more quickly — and earnestly — both Shelstrom and Jurcev could be on the ballot filling vacancies. Shelstrom also lives in Joyce's House district and could have filed for that seat, he said.

The situation is mirrored on the Democratic side, to a different degree. Democratic office-holders are known to slate their neighbors and pals as Republicans against themselves to avoid any real competition.

As for Murphy's case, there are those who offer a more sinister reason for her lackadaisical recruitment effort. As a Cook County Board of Review member, she accepts thousands of dollars in political contributions from some high-powered Democratic attorneys who request assessment breaks from her board. Giving the Democrats a pass here and there keeps her in their good graces at fundraising time.

Her political committees include Maureen Murphy Election Committee, Friends of Maureen Murphy, Worth Township Republican Organization, Coalition Party of Worth Township, Committee for Respected Leadership and the recently-folded Cook County Republican Leadership Organization.

All told, she controls more than $200,000 in campaign funds, some of it from firms that do business with the Board of Review.

Murphy has always insisted she follows the rules in campaign fundraising, discloses everything, and does not take contributions into account when deciding on tax break cases.

Regardless, here's a little advice for the Cook County GOP: If you sincerely want to regain footing in Cook County, quit sleeping with the enemy.

  • Harkmosty, are you serious in what you right? Financial ruin? This is a joke right. Just what financial ruin are you talking about besides your mind. Oh I get it you mean the layoffs, give me a break. Calderone supporter or not are you oblivious to news. Pick up the paper man or read the TV. Are you telling all of us here in lala land that no other towns have laid off employees?

Get you head out from under the rock

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:40 PM, June 04, 2006

  • So true,
Isn't it good strategy for republicans to let some safe democrat seats to unopposed, so they keep the democrat turnout low, so the top of the ticket (e.g. Topinka) is helped?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:58 PM, June 04, 2006

  • Here goes the wizard of oz Harkmosty now predicting the cost of insurance going up 25 times.

Could you share with all of us dummies how you calculated this mis calculation.

Come on man get your head out from under the rock. Imbicile.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:16 PM, June 04, 2006

  • Here goes Harkmosty again with idiodic statements. Nextel phones insurance going up 25x whats next.

Every employees had a Nextel phone how absurd. I don't know how many phones anyone had but this statement seems outlandish, but then again I guess we just have to consider the author. Imbicile.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 5:30 PM, June 05, 2006

  • Here goes Harkmost again, imbicile extrodinaire. Now it is insurance dropping coverage altogether, and "Almost" every employee. Whaaaat. And the best yet, illegal campaign contributions. You can bet that if there were illegal contributions the whackos would have been up the feds ass long time ago.

Oh wait, there comming. I know I know. I didn't have the pleasure of going to Proviso since I did not grow up here but I think you did and graduated or not you were sleeping when you should have been paying attention. Imbasario supreme.

  • If some of the imbicile dog bites would quit suing the village to try and make a quick buck we would not have these problems. You might be one of those looking for a quick buck.... well are you.

    What a bunch of Bullwash.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:39 PM, June 05, 2006

  • Well since you asked you are with your un-educated assessment of the facts. It seems like you form an opinion based on hearsay with no basis of fact. Most of what I read to date is innuendo, that all.

Stupid and corrupt are pinnacle of the postures of these blogs. Imbecile does not even begin to describe some of this nonsense.

Clearly, you are either and employee, close to an employee or have some other baggage in your psyche that is troubling you and ailing your emotions.

Your clearly stated positions supported by your conjecture of misleading regurgitation of innuendo is indicative of someone with sour grapes. But that’s ok man many of us can see and feel for you.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 8:17 PM, June 05, 2006

  • Yes Harkmosy calling out corrupt people without any fact places you in the category of trying to make a buck.

  • 7.5 Million is a very impressive number.

Pretty hard to dispute...unless you're biased and irrational, or a Welch.

How do you help a cash-strapped district?

    Bring back 7.5 million dollars.

    Gotta luv it.

Naw, she could not have tested the best could she.

Naw. What's said on here must be the truth just like Lt. Johnsen says..... Well I THINK. That's all it taks just think and then it becomes truth in your mind.
