and the big news out of Proviso

A shoe has dropped in Melrose Park. See Capitol Fax Blog (Rich Miller):
The former chief and six other former and current officers and employees of the Melrose Park Police Department operated the department as an illegal racketeering enterprise for at least a decade between 1996 and 2006, according to a federal grand jury indictment returned today, announced Patrick J. Fitzgerald, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. The indictment alleges that the former chief, Vito R. Scavo, and other defendants defrauded west suburban Melrose Park and its citizens by using police department personnel and property to operate several private security guard companies and provide personal services to Scavo; extorted village businesses into using security guard services provided by companies that Scavo and others controlled; and that Scavo committed individual and corporate tax fraud and improperly compensated police department employees who performed personal chores for him with compensatory time off that they had not earned. Scavo, who was village police chief from 1995 until he resigned in September 2006, was charged with racketeering conspiracy along with Deputy Police Chief Gary Montino and Michael “Mickey” Caliendo, former civilian supervisor of part-time police officers.

As part of the alleged conspiracy, Scavo and two other defendants, Guy Ric Cervone, a former police lieutenant recently promoted to commander, and German Cepeda, a former police department janitor and current code enforcement inspector for the village, allegedly obstructed a grand jury investigation of their conduct and tampered with potential grand jury witnesses.

Ric Cervone is the VP of the District 89 (Maywood and Melrose Park elementary schools) board of education.

  • These men who were indicted were all good men and great public servants! I am sure that what has happened is just a misunderstanding, but to the Feds anybody from Melrose Park with an Italian or Spanish surname is considered guilty to proven otherwise!
As a Melrose Parker I can tell you that our Police Force is the best in the Chicago land area!!!My heart goes out to these brave men and there families and I hope no one feels the need to destroy there good names and reputations!!!To those from Stone Park, who participated in this, and who want to destroy our village, go to HELL!

  • Take off your blinders "proud to be a melrose parker". They don't care about the village, just themselves!!! Dip in your own pocket to help them out. They have lined their own pockets with your money already, and taken innocent people down with them. Let them serve their time to think about what they did. God Bless the innocent people that have to pay for their crime!

  • Know all these men well, the only one I have any sympathy for is Montino. He is a good man who was manipulated by the power/money hungry Scavo. They are all thiefs hiding behind a badge and a gun. Cervone has never done what a cop is paid to do, instead he has been a political dooe knoocker and rumor spreader. Melrose Park needs to be cleaned out from the top down. Unfortuately Serpico isn't the one calling all the shots, The Feds should find out who is really running the town. Watch, This is realy all about a water project that's what the Feds really want

  • So when will Cervone be removed from the District 89 Board????????I don't think the school district would want or should have someone like this representing the board!

  • I can absolutely guarantee you that the Federal indictments against these men from the Melrose Park Police Department are totally correct! I worked as a police officer for Melrose Park for years and when I came there, I was an honest man. The corruption that surrounded me was so blatant that it was impossible to ignore. What about all of the current officers there who I KNOW are fully and totally aware of the corruption and are sworn to uphold the law: BUT TURN A BLIND EYE to all of it? Are they also not as guilty because they do not do their duties as sworn officers and speak up to the appropriate authorities regarding their knowledge of such felonious activities in their presence? All I can say is that I am happy to see that justice is prevailing in Melrose Park and my advice to the indicted officers is this: ADMIT YOUR GUILT AND CHANGE YOUR NOT GUILTY PLEAS TO GUILTY PLEAS. The Feds do not take lightly your resistance to their indictments when indeed, you all are GUILTY. It will be easier on all of you in sentencing if you do take responsibility for your actions NOW and avoid a lengthy, expensive trial. For in the end, you all are going to wind up being convicted felons and you ALL will go to a Federal Prison Camp to serve out your sentences. And men, it really is not that bad in Federal prison. That is, if you like bad food, bad conditions, and all your friends and family deserting you. HA HA HA you PRICKS! Glad to see you all got what you had coming. Didn't any of you learn any lessons from what happened to Marty and Nicky?? I guess not. At least Marty and Nicky stuck together and were men about what happened to them. You all are a bunch of PUSSIES. Especially, that PUSSY Cervone. All of us know he is a coward and afraid of his own shadow. He will like it in prison as he winds up being someone's BITCH! HA HA HA!!
