CRIME, Hubert "Boo Boo" Thompson charged with murder [D209]

I saw Hubert Thompson wrestle in high school. He was one of the most dominant high school wrestlers I'd ever seen. He was so strong he could pick-up the other heavyweights like they were little kids.

Chicago Tribune (Matthew Walberg):
For reasons that remained unclear Saturday, Thompson hurled [James] Malone [66 year old, a neighbor] over a balcony Friday afternoon, killing him, police said. Thompson was charged with first-degree murder and was being held in lieu of $3 million bail.

After attending Proviso West Thompson played football at Michigan State University. The article says Thompson was cut by the New Orleans Saints after two days for fighting with another player.

If I recall correctly (IIRC) Thompson had trouble scoring high enough on his college entrance exams to be admitted to a Division I school. There was talk of him being drafted directly to the NFL. He was that developed and talented.

I didn't interact with Thompson, but from what I heard through wrestlers he was a nice guy if a completely intimidating opponent.

[UPDATE: Sun-Times (Ben Goldberger and Dave Newbart) has the story on the front page of the Sunday paper.

[A couple things got my attention.
Authorities said Thompson allegedly made incriminating statements in an interview. He also allegedly told authorities that he believed Malone had tried to poison him.

DuPage County State's Attorney Joseph Birkett said Saturday that officials are awaiting the results of mental evaluations, expected this week. "There's some substantial psychological issues that have to be addressed," he said.

[Apparently Thompson and the victim were friendly. Thompson has a history of mental health issues.]

  • He is a nice guy. He is a gentle giant who is a great person. I wrestled with boo boo and knew- hung with him until 4 years ago, we kind of lost touch. This news sadens me because the boo boo i knew had a greater purpose in life. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family on this tragic moment.

  • A tragedy occured with the death of this gentleman and for the Thompson. From reading the newspaper clips it appears that Mr. Thompson was suffering from Mental Illness. He sounds that he was psychotic and delusional and was not properly under psychiatric care. This tragedy has destroyed two families and shows what a public health risk we have in this country we the lack of affordable and adequate mental health care.
Proviso Township goverment under Kathy Ryan, under the current trustees,Don Sloan,Tim Gilliam,Jesse martinez,Williams, under Grady Rivers have failed our community with there total disregard to mental health services. There allowing of having Danny Cogliniese and the mental health board in place, who know nothing and have no experience with medical issues and less with Mental Health issues, and the allowing of the Mental Health adminisitration to be run by politcal hacks with less knowledge is apprehensible.Who knows how many lives could have been saved and how many lives could be saved, along with less family tragedy,if we would bring in true mental health proffessionals to work in our community! There actions is and are criminal and there disregard for health matters is disgraceful. The death of this 66 y/o man and the the destruction of a person's life,(boo boo thompson) falls flately on the heads of Kathy Ryan, the trustees,Danny Coglinese and the mental health board along with the proviso mental health agency! All these peole need to be replaced and never allowed to have a say in Mnetla health issues.Mrs.Yarbrough and Miss Lightford should have legislation to remove these services from Township goverment ,so proper proffessionals could run these insititions.

  • I was friends with Boo Boo back at Michigan State. He was the type of guy who would do anything to help another. It is so sad to see that he didn't receive the proper help before it was too late for his innocent neighbor. Both families will remain in my prayers.

  • I was a friend / teammate of Boo Boo during high school. He always had a good heart and if he say me on the bus stop or walking to the bus stop in the mornings, he would give me a ride and always had positive things to say. My prayers go out to his family who loves him and the rest of the people like me from Bellwood who need to support our brother.

  • Bipolar? So what!!! Depression & anxiety, back & forth--it can easily be treated.
Do not give this thug a diagnosis of PSYCHOTIC---that is a much more severe condition than BIPOLAR.
Perhaps OJ will adopt him after the trial and they can golf their lives away?

A thug is a thug is a thug---unless he is an athlete, right?

  • If Hubert says "he tried to poison me", instead of calling the police, this "thug" takes the law into his own hands and throw a man over the balcony. What a bum. I hope he gets 25 to life.

  • What insensitive things to say about someone you don't even know! I went to MSU with him and from what I've heard of him (Boo Boo) he was a very nice person. I bet if it was someone from your family with a mental illness involved in something like this, you would be protecting them 100% regardless of the situation. Who are you to judge?? Only God really knows what happened between Boo Boo and James Malone. Mental illness is real and the sooner people realize that, the more people with mental illness can be helped.

  • WOW. I went to Proviso with this kid. Can't believe we're talking about the same person. I hope he gets help.

  • I've worked with Hubert for the past year and he was not bipolar, depressed and he was NO thug...he was a nice guy who WAS shizophrenic and I know that for a fact. He heard and saw things that were not really there. He was not medicated and that is a shame because his life and the families lives are ruined. It was obdivous that he was not mentally sound but he did do something wrong and even though i believe he should be punished for his actions he deserves help for his illness.

  • For all of those who left positive comments and words of encouragement for my family and I thank you. I am boo boo's niece. He was bot by any means a Thug. I am not sayign that because he is family either. He was like my big brother and he was one of the nicest people I know. Perhaps too nice at times. He didi not accomplish what he felt he was destined to do in life! His biggest fault is feeling like he let everybody down when being himself was more than good enough. He didi need help and unfortunatly he did not recieve that proper care before this tragedy. Just because a man is BIG and Black does not make him THUG. Mental illnesses are a real thing. ANd unless you are a doctor people should not try and discredit soemthing just for the sake of saying something.

  • I am saddened by the news I was praying that it wasn't true but I was sitting there watching the news clip. I went Proviso West with Boo Boo and the person that I am reading about is someone else. I pray to God that they really help him instead of throwing him in a cell. Mental health is not to be taken lightly. God bless Hubert and God bless both families.

  • I knew Boo Boo very well in high school. What impressed me about him was not just his great strength but his ability to check that strength with unmatched gentleness. He was not a thug or a roughkneck by any means. He was no pushover and would assert his will but he bullied no one. Most people liked him.

I lost touch with him after highschool.

The thought that the gentleman that I knew in H.S. is a murderer seems like it is about a different person. The person I knew does not exist anymore.

  • I went to high school with Boo Boo. He was the most gentle person I met in HS. He is not a thug. Anyone who could ever say he was did not know him in any way.

  • I met Boo Boo at MSU. Very sad to hear this news. Does anyone know if he is getting any help? Whatever became of this situation?

  • First and foremost I would like to send my prayer to the family of boo-boo.I played high school football for 4 years with boo and he had the biggest heart of anybody Ive ever met it my life,he was always big kid in a grown mans body who carried the weight of his family, school, and even town on his back.We should be hoping that he gets the help he needs so he can return and be a productive member of society

  • Well I've taken the time to read all the articles and comments about my good friend Hubert because he didn't like to be called boo boo anymore. For those of us who know him yes he is a little different since high school but he is no killer. I've been to see him in jail and he doesn't carry the conversation of a killer. Now I'm saying this cause he is my friend but I understand that he couldn't help what he did and to this day don't fully understand it. I pray that the people that knew him can step up and try to help weather it be prayer, encouragement etc. Hubert does not need to be in jail he needs to get the medicaine to help him live a productive life. were the same age and I couldn't imagine how he must feel being locked up and not even really knowing why. I agree with the blogger that said the school district failed him and I totally agree. I was there in school with him when everyone was his friend cause they knew he was going to be a star one day. I feel like a coach in either high school or college hell or even in the nfl shoould have seen something to help him get help. We need to make sure that something like this never happens again . has anyone heard anything else on his case I've lost contact with his sisters.

  • Can we feel bad for the poor man that lost his life. Also his grieving family.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:41 AM, September 11, 2009

  • Should a book be written about Hubert Thompson?

He seems like a good subject for a book. He possessed immense talent and had a mental health condition that proved to be fatal.

Could he have been helped? Should someone have intervened sooner? Or did they intervene and the interventions were unsuccessful?

  • I'm writing on here to encourage others who may know or don't know family members or friends living with a mental illness..I've know Boo Boo since grade school and me and him were like grade school lovers all the way until our senior year in high school. I have never seen him be mean or ignorant towards any one and for that matter never knew a problem existed. Let's please pray for his family for him and for the victim & his family. It is so sad to me that once someone's life is tooken how sides can be chosen. When you have no clue who the individual was before the crime took place. I truly feel that the high school, college & NFL knew he had a illness but chose to ignore it for their fame and fortune. It's sad that the moment you commit a unforseen crime people turn their backs on you. Boo Boo I love you still as if we were in grade school and even though its been years since I've seen you or the family..I've always thought about you all and I pray to GOD that he helps you thru this..The enemy is out to attack and its time he gets defeated..You will OVERCOME this difficult time in your life...I will continue to pray for strength for both families...Be Blessed
