SPORT, Mickey Perry leaves Wisconsin hoops program [M]

InsideIllini.com:
MADISON, Wis. - Mickey Perry, a redshirt freshman guard on the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team, has requested and been granted his official release from the University of Wisconsin, head coach Bo Ryan announced Friday.

“Mickey has decided to move on to another university and seek out other opportunities to further his basketball and educational experience,” Ryan said. “He is a fine young man who I wish nothing but the best for in the future.”

Perry, a native of Maywood, Ill., redshirted last season and appeared in seven games this year for the Badgers. He played a total of 23 minutes and scored seven points. His best performance was against Southern on Nov. 19 when he scored five points and had two rebounds in nine minutes.

“I want to thank the University of Wisconsin, along with my teammates and coaches for all their support during my time here,” Perry said. “Wisconsin gave me a chance to play at an extremely high level and be a part of something special and I’m grateful for that. The Badger basketball program has developed into a great program with a lot of great players. I’ve decided to look for an opportunity where I can help a team by contributing more on the floor during games. I also want to thank the fans at the University of Wisconsin for all the support they have provided myself and my teammates. I wish Wisconsin all the best in the future and hopefully they can continue the special season that has started here.”

Anybody have details?

  • I know Perry and his mother. he is a fine young man. I believe that parents and the athlete need to assess carefully their options about taking any sport scholarship. Yes, education is first, but there are too many other great universities out there who can offer a great education as well. Kids want to play! Perry red-shirted last year and I was looking for him when Wisconsin palyed games on tv and he was on the bench for the entire game. He is a better ball player. Kids and parents need to know who will be returning to that school next year, who is the school recruiting. The recruiter sitting in the kid living room with the parents always are going to sell "praise dreams". "Oh, you son/ daughter, is who we are looking for. they are the piece to the puzzle". Coaches are concern about one thing on the college level, that is winning ! Hell, if another kid come along and they think is a little better than your son/daughter, guess what your son/daughter is on the bench. I am sure that Perry is going to land at a university, perhaps, somewhere in Illinois, like UIC, Eastern, Southern, NIU, where he is going to get alot of playing time. oh yea, he will get a quality education. Our Illinois boys should think twice about running to another State and play basketball or any other sport. Keep your talent in Illinois. Screw, Duke, Wisconsin - stay in Illinois. Good luck Perry, I am sure you will be starting or getting alot of playing time next year.

  • Perry will be alright. He will or probably have a university in mind. Screw, Wisconsin. This is a valuble learning experience for Perry. This will make him stronger. I think our young men and women need to think twice about jumping to other States and playing ball. We have enough schools right here in Illinois where you can get a quality education. Yes, education is first, but lets be for real, kids want to play. They redshirted 0 really bullshitted him. they sold him a dream. They should have been up front with him so he had time to look somewhere else earlier. Be careful of these college recruiters cominhg into your living room when you are a senior, talking about you are the missing piece to their championship puzzle. They tell everybody that bullshit. Coaches want to win and if another kid comes along and is seen as a little better than your son/daughter and can help the coach keep his six figure job and some cases seven figures job, guess what! Your son/daughter is on the bench. Coaches are pimps! Get luck Perry!
