MEDIA, article linking Congressman to terrorism misleading [7th CD]

What’s wrong with the Forest Park Review (Terry Dean) article “Terrorists’ money goes toward congressional junket”?

Linking Congressman Danny K. Davis is more sensational than accurate.

1. Davis did nothing wrong or negligent.
2. No one is alleging Davis did anything wrong or negligent.
3. No one is claiming Davis should implement any precautions to avoid doing the same thing in the future.

Davis went to see areas ravaged by the 2004 tsunami and how relief operations were making a difference. The stated purpose of the trip was what really happened.

The country Davis visited, Sri Lanka, has an on-and-off civil war. Partisans in war can have humanitarian impulses. Movements often provide services to bolster their credibility with potential followers.

The article begins,
Rep. Danny Davis (D-7th) said he did not know that a trip he took to the Asian country of Sri Lanka was paid for in-part with laundered money from a terrorist group.

The lead sentence is misleading because it implies Davis is denying an allegation that doesn’t exist. A more accurate story would start like,
The Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America received money from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (aka, the Tamil Tigers), which is a terrorist organization according to the U.S. Department of State. About $13,000 went to pay for Rep. Danny Davis to visit Sri Lanka to see the results of relief operations after the 2004 tsunami. Because of the money laundering Davis’ staff had no practical way to determine the origin of the money.

Of course this isn’t as sexy a story. But that’s because there isn’t much of a story here.

I don’t like the layout used by the Forest Park Review. It’s a thin story, so it probably doesn’t deserve to be on the front page. But even if it was a slow news week it seems unfair to link Davis to terrorism on the front page and in the headlines only to bury the information about how he didn’t do anything wrong on page 10. It’s not defamatory, but it’s misleading.

If you accept the criticisms in the article as legitimate then you favor a world where members of Congress will never get both sides of foreign policy issues. Members of Congress won’t accept invites from anyone who may receive funding from the same people who fund “terrorist” organizations.

Which brings up the point, how does the State Department distinguish between terrorism and legitimate insurgencies? The short answer is politics. If an organization is against the United States or U.S. allies they’re terrorists; if they use violence in support of U.S. goals they’re “freedom fighters”.

The Tamil Tigers tried to bribe their way off the State Department terrorism list and they got caught. I guess they didn’t hire the right Republican lobbyist to make their bribes stick.

  • The point is...Should our Congressman be hobnobbing with groups known to be affiliated with or an extension of a terrorist organization? To hold on to a technicality that he did nothing illegal is not the big picture. The appearance is what counts.

  • Gee,
Nyberg defends Danny Davis. What are the odds? Carl, you're a partisan hack with no moral compass.

  • The Forest Park review appears to be getting worse ever since Seth Stern left. It's most recent editorial regarding peanuts is really a joke. I hope that the new editor and reporter does his homework and read Seth's material and realize how good the Forest Park review caN BE AND TRY TO EMULATE HIS work. I'll be watching to see if the work improves or not!!!

  • You mean the new guy isn't in Doolin's pocket like Seth Stern was. Don't worry, Nyberg and Goetz have no doubt already been trying to brainwash the new editor to hating everyone that Doolin says to hate, to believing that all of the honest cops are brutal and the crooked cops are victims, and spouting off that when the Mayor exercises leadership it's somehow the downfall of civilization. Yeah, that Seth Stern really did a lot of ethical reporting - NOT. What a sleaze he was - good riddance. Maybe the new editor will have a mind of his own and report news that matters to people, not what matters to the political agenda of one candidate for mayor.

  • Danny Davis is a moron and is such a useless Representitive. His followers are just as stupid and corrupt as him. Remeber when Davis crowned Rev. Sun Moon Lord of the Earth? Davis is a joke and his followers Yarbrough and Shapiro are also! The West side district of Davis is worse off with him in the seat and yet no true Democratic opposition has been put on motor mouth Davis!
I for one am not surprised with him visiting Terrorists from Sri Lanka and getting paid for it. No wonder Yarbrough tried to impeach Bush, she was following Davis's lead and was not embarrassed to state she Hates America and our way of Life!!!
As far as I'm concerned both Davis and Yarbrough, along with Shapiro should be shipped to Sri Lank\a and made to stay there!

  • I could'nt agree more with Candid, Seth Stern was a slime ball, and good riddance for his retirement!
I guess Droolin Doolin can't be foolin the new editor, who shows to be an honest broker in his reporting and doe'nt believe in writing falsehoods and rumors, and instead wants to focus on everyday life in Forest Park not the political stories that Droolinm is a Foolin Dolin wants!

  • I am shocked that Carl doesn't feel Danny didn't do anything wrong.

    How can this be?

Oh I forgot Danny's in his hip pocket.

I can tell already that the new editor is doing a much better job than Seth.

First because he is not in Doolin's pocket, and has not been brain washed by Goetz and Dwyer who are 2 of the 3 stooges.

This new guy has a head on his sholders, good for him.

  • Is there any evidence Tamil Sangams of North America was known to be affiliated with the Tamil Tigers before this?

If the federal government (Bush administration) had this information they probably should have shared it with Davis.

By Blogger Carl Nyberg, at 8:34 PM, September 18, 2006

  • I agree Davis crowning the Rev. Moon the Messiah was goofy. See Politics1.com (Ron Gunzburger).

As I pointed out in an earlier discussion (linked in the first comment) most of what I've written on Davis is at least somewhat critical.

I have a high regard for Seth Stern. Not only did Seth get good stories he wrote in a smooth style and made the police blotter humorous.

By Blogger Carl Nyberg, at 8:39 PM, September 18, 2006

  • President Bush wants to expand his power to torture and he wants to create courts that give the death penalty based on secret evidence.

Our national media treats these matters as legitimate policy proposals.

And I'm the one with no moral compass?

    Whatever.

  • I miss Seth. He brought alotta light in a very dark place--the schools.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 9:15 PM, September 18, 2006

  • The Tamil Tigers were already on the U.S. terrorists organization list. As a Congressman with a professional staff with access to everything, it would have taken minimal effort for Danny Davis to figure out the connection. There simply is no excuse. Anyone trying provide cover for Davis is grasping for straws.

  • My goodness. This Doolin has you people all wound up pretty tight. A Danny Davis discussion all of the sudden becomes an anti-Doolin discussion? I would suggest that Seth Stern had above average intelligence for an editor of such a small paper and that he quickly learned when, if and how politicians were using him to promote their agendas. Maybe he found Doolin to be the most open, honest, upfront and articulate of the bunch. It would be hard for an editor to report local news when most of the news makers he has to interview either didn't call him back, didn't know or understand what they were talking about or couldn't convey their position in a way that it could be reported intelligently. That's Doolin's fault? Maybe, just maybe this Doolin has the right stuff, Seth Stern saw it and it made his job easier.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:20 PM, September 18, 2006

  • Got the right stuff alright. Bunch of bull shit stuff like a used car salesman

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:23 PM, September 18, 2006

  • Seth Stern, Carl Nyberg and Dave Goedtz were all political hacks for Karen Yarbrough, Danny Davis, Larry Shapiro and Dave King. The Forest Park Review was a respected small town paper before them, but itlost all credibility because of them. How is it that they constantly beat on Calderone, Ryan and Welch, but ignore the obvious faults of others like Doolin, Johnsen, Steinbach, Karen Yarbrough and Danny Davis. Doolin is a fool, and if the people of Forest Park elect him mayor, they will set Forest Park back 15 years. Johnsen is a bigot who Doolin would make police chief. Yarbrough is an obvious liar. She takes donations from the likes of Anthony Bruno, but escapes the criticism that Calderone and Welch receives. She supports companies like Exelon that are killing the community with 22% rate increases. But where's the outrage for Seth, Carl and Goedtz. Danny Davis takes money from terrorist organizations and hangs out with Rev. Moon, but where's the outrage? Has anyone questioned why the board minority at Proviso is really so upset with the majority? I think there is more to it, and I'm sure more will come out later. Stay tuned.

  • Seth Stern got bullshitted by Dollin and his minions. Boy did he get a surprise. One we figured out Doolin's bullshit and the 3 stooges he took off for better places.

  • To Patrick Doolin,
you can disagree with our Beloved Mayor and other trustees, but
the venemous outpourings against our village and our mayor and anyone who disagrees with you that have dominated this blog have nothing to do with changing or trying to change anything.
My issue is that people like Doolin have no right to assasinate anybody's character in the safety of anonimity. He lists a bunch of things that are Mayor could have done, albeit sarcastically, and interjected a ton of half truths and outright misinformation.

Ironically Doolin, the ones who sparked the changes to clean up Forest Park has been Tony Calderone and the board Majority and Chief Ryan! If he(Doolin) truly cared for our Village, he knows this as fact,he would admit it and not condem and teardown our village and elected officials and policemen.
I'm live in Forest Park for over 12 years, I see it, I know who these people(Doolin,Johnson,Harder and Frawley) are, and their motives are as righteous or well intentioned as the wolf in little red grandma's bed. I've seen their kind before. They are also morally bankrupt and try to blow the whistle not out of civic duty, but out of spite. But that's the reality of the circumstances.
like I said before, Corruption and misconduct disguises itself in various forms in almost every public administration and in particular police departments. Look what happened in Oak Brook with two officers off duty at a restaurant. Or Bensenville a few years back with Off duty work. The list goes on and on.
Doolin is just another bully that needs to be layed out by the quit guy minding his own bussiness. And because of that I have no respect for him or his kind.
Believe me, It's easier to condemn and teardown than to praise and build! Doolin and his crew of bullies are just a bunch of pussies for what they are saying and for creating hate in our village!

  • Forest Park is my town as well. In my opinion it is in the best financial shape it has ever been in since I have lived here. That started in 2003 when Doolin & Steinbach got elected. Prior to that, the village was broke. Not because of some fluke, but because Calderone and his ship of fools had and still have no idea how to run a municipal government. Calderone surrounds himself with incompetence to make himself look more intelligent and everybody knows it. If this was a $16 million dollar corporation and Calderone was the C.E.O., the shareholders would have shown him the door years ago. Let's break it down for you. More streets, alleys and infrastructure have been rebuilt in the last 3 years under Doolin and his public works department than over the last 30 years. Guess who was in charge of public works before Doolin? Gillian for 4 years and then Hosty for 4 years. What did they accomplish? They were more interested in playing big shot politician with their village credit cards than they were in being responsible stewards of the taxpayers money. Doolin on the other hand doesn't name any picnics after himself, he doesn't spend scarce resources on shameless self promotion like Calderone, he doesn't hang out with the dregs of proviso township and has fought for me the taxpayer since the day he took office. I don't care about Calderones stupid parties and all his feel good bullshit. I want action and a return on my tax investment, I want my taxes spent on improving services, I want my taxes spent on rebuilding the infrastructure of this town, I want a guy that doesn't hide behind the issues like Calderone and Doolin delivers. Sometimes the truth hurts and like him or not Doolin is the better man!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12:48 PM, September 19, 2006

  • Actually, touche does make a a few interesting points - especially on Calderone's shortcomings coming into the election. Not sure that Doolin can take credit for the infrastructure improvements - that was a team effort it seems.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:11 PM, September 19, 2006

  • The Doolin and Steinbach supporters need to make up their mind.

One day they say they can't get anything done because they are in the minority.

Then in one swift move they save the town from bankruptcy. Huh?

Bankrupt one day and fixed the next? Huh?

    Classic Doolin and Steinbach bullshit.

They couldn't fix shit and never have. Steinbach failed a business. Doolin closed down one.

Gillian, Hosty and Calderone say it comming and had the balls to fix it without blaming anyone else.

The looooosers Doolin and Steinbach tried a nice bait and switch but it didn't work we got there number.

    What a sorry duo.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:47 PM, September 19, 2006

  • Ever hear that saying when the cat's away, the mice will play? Doolin is the cat and Calderone and his merry men are the mice. I'll dummy it down for you. No one on the previous village board had the balls to take Calderone on head to head and one on one. You see the same thing in Bellwood and Melrose Park. Everyone is afraid to stand up to these punk Mayors. They all just tucked their tails between their legs and voted aye with the Mayor because they didn't have the courage to stand up to him. Didn't matter if it was the wrong thing to do, whether it was a bad decision that would waste the money of those that elected them to office, didn't matter if their spineless yes votes put clean taxpayer money into the dirty pockets of Bruno, Serpico, Welch, Segal & Ronan. They were chicken shits who couldn't muster the courage to say No to Calderone. Then comes the election of 2003 and Calderones worst nightmare comes true. Someone gets elected that isn't afraid of him. Doolin looks Calderone in the eye and not only says No, he says HELL NO. And that my friend McGaff, is the only reason it changed. Doolin & Steinbach paid attention, they challenged the stupid decisions Calderone and his crew were making and they made the debate public for all to see how stupid Calderone and his crew really were. Unafraid and serving only those that elected them to do the right thing. The doctor will tell you, nothing cures an infection like fresh air and the light of day. Doolin has proven himself to not only me but everyone I know. The lights have been turned on and Calderone and his band of public dis-servants are scared, desperate and well on their way to nothing more than a mention in the history books at the Forest Park historical society and Forest Park will be a better place for it.

  • When you and your candidate have been beaten soft by the truth and that very same truth is staring you squarely in the face, your only saving grace and defense is to say what McGaff said above, nothing about nothing. Do me a favor McGaff, next time you want to spare with someone who actually knows what they're talking about, don't show up to a gunfight with a butter knife. The record is the record and your man Calderone can't change the dishonest, disgraceful and unethical things he has done. It's a matter of public record now. You see there is no reconciliation on election day. He will not be given the opportunity to trade-in one of his rights, and he's done some things right, in a desparate effort to eliminate all of his wrongs. This ain't a game of get into heaven, this is the game of honest government and just like George Ryan, you can commute all the death sentences you want but that ain't going to wipe away the years of deceit and corruption you have perpetrated against those that have placed the publics trust and money in you. It just don't work that way McGaff and it ain't going to work for Calderone in Forest Park. The damage is done, the message will be spread, the people will speak and it will not be Calderones name they will be calling.
