SPORT, P. West football beat Stagg 39-29 [D209]

The Star (Dale Sink)
The Panthers were treated to 27 points in the fourth quarter in the come-from-behind 39-29 victory that lasted three hours and 10 minutes.

Proviso quarterback Anthony Shorter threw for 168 yards, completing 8 of 23 passes with four going for touchdowns.

ChicagoSports.com (Barry Temkin) tells the human interest story of Proviso West's coach, Famous Hulbert, a Proviso West grad.
Proviso West football will certainly give him that [the challenge of a lifetime]. West has never reached the state playoffs, and since its last winning season—5-4 in 1996—it has a 13-69 record, including 2-52—with a current 28-game losing streak—in the tough West Suburban Conference Silver.

  • This new football coach has a better chance than Chris Head or Cecil Ratlif. Now the district needs to focus on the Basketball program . the Coach Miller guy is no good for children or the program. The district 209 has had the highest transfer rate of student athletes in twenty years because parents dont want the children in a program under Millers direction. he has even run away his own Assistant coaches because they all found out the truth about his agenda and purpose. He is a yes man for welch and thats how his wife also got the job at West. It would be much easier for miller to resign than to get fired in april. The new board will do whats right for 209 in April.

  • I was present at the Stagg game last Friday and very impressed with the leadership of Mr. Hulbert. It seems that the kids really respect him and wants to play for him. i am not going to get into the politcal side of the situation, because if everybody took a look at themseleves and some point politics ( good or bad) got us to where we are today as a person. Proviso West football team in my opinion is on the verge of having a solid football program. With the youth football teams in the community. Coaches who are involved in those youth football programs on Mr. Hulbert football staff is a good step in the right direction. Stagg Football team was not a cup cake game. Stagg football program is solid. Proviso West beat a good program last Friday. It is time to knock out Morton this Friday and shock the world in the conference. To the politician, let Mr. Hulbert coach - give him the resources. As for the player, keep your grade up, stay eligible, do not hurt your team because you are goofing off, missing classes, getting suspended.

    Go Panthers !

  • While famous was at LT he taught gym. He told one of his classes one day when they were out side, "A day may come when we may or may not be attacked by a rabid dog. If this happens I expect the men to take of their shirts and put it on their non dominant arm. I expect the women to run and go for help or hide in the trees. Men, you will offer up your arm for the dog to bite and while it is biting your arm I will stab it in the eye repeatedly with my keys until it is subdued." How awesome is that!
