SPORT, P. West football beat Stagg 39-29 [D209]

The Star (Dale Sink)
The Panthers were treated to 27 points in the fourth quarter in the come-from-behind 39-29 victory that lasted three hours and 10 minutes.

Proviso quarterback Anthony Shorter threw for 168 yards, completing 8 of 23 passes with four going for touchdowns.

ChicagoSports.com (Barry Temkin) tells the human interest story of Proviso West's coach, Famous Hulbert, a Proviso West grad.
Proviso West football will certainly give him that [the challenge of a lifetime]. West has never reached the state playoffs, and since its last winning season—5-4 in 1996—it has a 13-69 record, including 2-52—with a current 28-game losing streak—in the tough West Suburban Conference Silver.

  • I wish Hulbert the best of luck at West. I hope he can withstand the pressures from Wallace and her politcal posse. I disagree with the way Hulbert got the job, with Ratliff being forced out by Wallace, but so far he is doing a decent job. Hulbert needs to realize that he is in the most poltical district in Illinois. He got his job politcally and due external and internal pressures he will have to hold on to it that same way. Proviso is a good stepping stone for Hulbert to go on to bigger and better opportunities, and I hope he knows that like the wind, Proviso does and will change.
Hopefully, he will not end up like Chris Head. Welch, Miller, and Wallace really did him in. As long as Hulbert does what Wallace and Welch says he will be fine. I guess he will do what he has to do to make payday.

  • This new football coach has a better chance than Chris Head or Cecil Ratlif. Now the district needs to focus on the Basketball program . the Coach Miller guy is no good for children or the program. The district 209 has had the highest transfer rate of student athletes in twenty years because parents dont want the children in a program under Millers direction. he has even run away his own Assistant coaches because they all found out the truth about his agenda and purpose. He is a yes man for welch and thats how his wife also got the job at West. It would be much easier for miller to resign than to get fired in april. The new board will do whats right for 209 in April.

  • I was present at the Stagg game last Friday and very impressed with the leadership of Mr. Hulbert. It seems that the kids really respect him and wants to play for him. i am not going to get into the politcal side of the situation, because if everybody took a look at themseleves and some point politics ( good or bad) got us to where we are today as a person. Proviso West football team in my opinion is on the verge of having a solid football program. With the youth football teams in the community. Coaches who are involved in those youth football programs on Mr. Hulbert football staff is a good step in the right direction. Stagg Football team was not a cup cake game. Stagg football program is solid. Proviso West beat a good program last Friday. It is time to knock out Morton this Friday and shock the world in the conference. To the politician, let Mr. Hulbert coach - give him the resources. As for the player, keep your grade up, stay eligible, do not hurt your team because you are goofing off, missing classes, getting suspended.

    Go Panthers !

  • Thanks for the support... Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. However, let the record state that I would be making roughly $85,000 to 95,000 this year if I would have stayed at LT as an assistant varsity football coach. I took a $25,000-35,000 PAY CUT to become the head coach at PW and over the next 25 years I'll lose over $875,000 in salary if I stay in district 209. I was an All-American at PW in 1993, a UI football player, and over the years I have been offered numerous Division I and high school coaching opportunities. I also have a Master's in Curriculum Development and Instruction and I'm 6 hours away from a Master's in Administration. I came home to PW to make a difference and to be a CHAMPION. Please don't insult me about paydays, politics, or anything like that... I didn't initially want the job, I wanted to make $95,000 in 2006! God told me to take a leap of faith... It's not about what Proviso can do for me, it's about what I can do for the children in MY community. Please feel free to contact me at 708-202-6360...

  • While famous was at LT he taught gym. He told one of his classes one day when they were out side, "A day may come when we may or may not be attacked by a rabid dog. If this happens I expect the men to take of their shirts and put it on their non dominant arm. I expect the women to run and go for help or hide in the trees. Men, you will offer up your arm for the dog to bite and while it is biting your arm I will stab it in the eye repeatedly with my keys until it is subdued." How awesome is that!
