KLEPT, Shak's back!

Michael Shakman, that is.

Sun-Times (Abdon M. Pallasch, Steve Patterson contributing):
Attorney Michael Shakman asked a federal judge Monday to appoint a monitor to oversee all hiring in Cook County government -- just as the judge has done for the city of Chicago....

[Todd] Stroger said he did not think too many members of his 8th Ward Democratic organization had county jobs or a favored status for promotions, as laid out in the Sun-Times last week. He said that a federal monitor might be as "costly" for the county as he said it had been for the city, but that he would not fight it.

I asked a county employee about Gerald Nichols, the patronage boss for former County Board President John Stroger. The county employee said he applied for a promotion. Nichols told him he'd need the blessing of his committeeman, a Stroger ally.

I'd like to see Phil Ponce or someone else asked Todd Stroger if he believes county government considers the applications and promotions of the non-politically connected on a level playing field with the politically connected. If Stroger admits political considerations are considered the follow up question should be, "Under what circumstances is it fair to consider political connections in hiring and promotion?"

BTW, does Todd Stroger have a campaign website?

  • I think that if Commissioner Forrest Claypool had won the Primary Election, there would not be all this focus by the Chicago media on former Cook County Board President John Stroger's administration. It's as if they're hell bent on sabotaging Alderman Stroger's election chances by constantly reporting negatively about county government. I heard Commissioner Tony Peraica railing that Gerald Nichols was extremely overpaid to simply prioritize Stroger's mail and make public appearances on his behalf. I have previously worked and interned in offices where the mail is opened, sorted, and distributed to the appropriate personnel. The chief executive's mail always went to a rather highly paid assistant for further scrutiny before making to the desk of the big boss. That's standard procedure in large offices and corporations. Imagine the amount of mail that comes to Cook County addressed to the President of the Cook County Board. There needs to be a high level official who has the knowledge of what should and should not get to the boss' desk. It's easy to ridicule the job of prioritizing mail, dealing with personnel issues, and making public appearances on President Stroger's behalf. But it is far from a do-nothing-job in a $3 billion organization.

  • I suppose that is one way of justifying the job. If Claypool had won the primary, of course no one would bother talking about the most bloated and corrupt administration in county history. Mostly because it would be history. Maybe you'd like to explain away the job of food taster next.

  • To the famous Proviso Guru, what's with being a proffessional apologist? Anybody with some common sense, with some regard for decency, honesty and most of all with brains, would be repulsed with the corruption in Cook County goverment!
A person who defends this, or these actions, is basically either deaf, dumb and blind, or is probably benifiting from the County in some way or form with either a job(through connections or ghost payroller)!
Your blind loyalty and reasoning for supporting the stench of Corruption in the County Goverment, just makes it easier for me to understand why the Germans did nothing to impede or stop Hitler,or the Russians with Stalin or the Cambodians with Pol Pot, or the Ughandans with Idi Amin!!!!
But Mr. Guru, we here in Proviso are fed up with corruption and cronyism and bad goverment, that is why we over threw Welch and Moore this past April and I hope that the pundits would look at the votes and understand those numbers, that nobody will tolerate this level of corruption, favoritism or cronyism again!!!!
Guru, you need to join us in stopping corruption, not perpetuating it and spreading some out dated, lame excuse why it should be contiued. What happened with your values and idealism?

  • You know, I'm not one to be influenced by rhetoric. I agree that there is waste in Cook County Government. Just as there is waste in the City of Chicago, State of Illinois, or even in the villages of Proviso. But people, let's be honest about this. Who would even care about someone's job in Cook County if the media, who overwhelmingly endorsed the loser, Forrest Claypool, had not published this stuff. I am totally against corruption wherever it exists. But you have to be able to read between the lines and realize the true motivations of your sources of information. We should all look at the individual candidates and make a decision based on their records and proposals.

  • provisoguru, it doesn't seem like you are "totally against corruption wherever it exists".

Should the voters do something about the existing corruption? Or should the voters merely trust that Todd Stroger will address the problem?

By Blogger Carl Nyberg, at 3:59 PM, August 30, 2006

  • Carl, the voters have a choice between 2 candidates. I have to answer your question like this. The question itself is flawed. It assumes that it is already proven that significant corruption exist at the county. That is not the case. Sure, we all know that with any corporation of that size that there are some bad apples. But just because newspapers and cadidates make claims doesn't mean it's the gospel. So as a democratic voter, I think that all democratic voters should elect a person with similar beliefs and vote for Todd Stroger. He's not a county official now and should not be held responsible for whatever wrongdoing is supposedly going on there. Ald. Stroger has acknowledged that due to the budget shortfalls, there would have to be some belt tightening. Let's judge him by his work and not by the rhetoric of people with obvious motivations.

  • Is Todd Stroger the candidate of continuity? What does it mean for Cook County government to practice continuity after the election?

pg, it seems like you want Todd Stroger to have the benefits of being the legacy of John Stroger, but not the liabilities.

Realistically, if Cook County elects Todd Stroger we're probably stuck with him for 30-40 years.

If Peraica gets elected, he's got to do a great job or he's gone in four years.

  • To Proviso Guru, I am stunned by your cynical response, but I am not surprised!
You who states to be a loyal democrat, and thus by his reasoning would vote for Hitler or Stalin if they also were Democrats, why don't you get offended when Blacks steal from Blacks, like Stroger, Perkins,Rivers Welch,Kelly,Flowers and others do it?
If Stroger wants to be board President, why won't he step down from Alderman and take over the postion now?And stop with the mumble jumble responses!
The guys a piece of shit, who's only there because his father got him there, and because his father was a "yessum negro"!
Now you know why the Democrats are the minority party in America, because corrupt, communists like your self run the party and support fringe lunatics and corrupt individuals, and are afraid to tell there crooks and lunatics and communists to go find another party to destroy!!!!

  • To: Stunned Democrat

The lack of your intellegence and the depth of your deceit is disturbing.

I feel extremly sorry for the students you preside over at District 209...

If the community only knew what I know about you...

  • It's true that is Todd Stroger wins, chances are he'll be the Cook County Board President for many years. All I'm saying is let's not blame him for any problems that exist now. He's not there yet. On the other hand, Peraica has been there. But his only agenda has been to be an obstructionist for the sole purpose of having a political platform for his run for Cook County Board President. It's been no secret that Peraica was going to run for this office for a couple of years. He is as phony as they come.

By Blogger Provisoguru, at 9:33 AM, September 01, 2006

  • To Proviso Guru, I guess your correct, if Hitler was a Cook County Democrat you'd also vote for him!I get your logic, so if Stroger told all cook county democrats that Jews were evil and that the must be eliminated and also double taxed, we as Democrats should go along and spout the Party Line, because we want to fit in so badly and be such brainwashed robots, and keep our jobs at the county!
I can see you now, dressed in your Nazi or Communist uniform, shouting "All Jews must pay double the taxes than non-Jews because your people are taking advantage of us, the weak willed, stand for no principal Democrats of Cook County , who won't question are boss and Dear Leader Toddler Stroger"!
I'd sure would hate to be with you in a prisoner of War camp, you'll squeal on your own guys and tell us,"what did you want me to do,they stated they were going to torture me and not feed me", so I gave you up and your escape plans"! "Don't worry guys, we'll go along to get along, until somebody brave enough will come to save us"!
Your a traitor to the people and to yourself, your a Bendict Arnold!

  • Hey, did you hear about those Northside Demcoratic Committemen. There at it again. State Representative Larry McKeon (D) decided that his failing health precludes him from remaining on the ballot for the November election. The committemen have gotten together and replaced him with another cadidate as the law requires. That candidate is the chief of staff to one of the local Aldermen. An insider! Gregory Harris will be the next representative because there is no Republican opposition on the ballot. What a sham! This is corruption! The system is a fraud! Those damn Democrats are crooks! Behind the scenes, back-smoke filled room politics of the extreme! etc. etc. etc.... Come on guys, help me out. Where's the outrage? Isn't this illegal? Call Peraica, Claypool, and the crazed schizo bloggers. Let's hold a press conference denouncing this arrogant disregard of the taxpayers who had no say in this selection!
