Proviso Probe

ED, what would you tell Stan Fields about Proviso? [D209]

Stan Fields has been offered the superintendent position at Proviso Township High Schools (District 209).

Steven suggested that we try to inform Stan Fields about District 209.
Maybe, we can articulately, intelligently, and gently point Mr. Fields to certain problem areas that he may want to eventually address through an appropriate channel or means of communication with him?

What are the top few things you would tell Fields about District 209 if you had 5-15 minutes with him?

  • At Field's level you don't need just anyone offering advice. The guy looks at the books, sizes up the situation and determines what has to be done and what are the consequences of inaction.

Since the biggest item in a budget rests in the area of labor cost/compensation, this will be the primary target area.

The poster who chided Fields for his effort to eliminate dept chair positions just didn't get it. Everyone becomes expendable, and you aim to do so without increasing the number of student per classroom. Thus, just about every other area becomes up for grabs, depending on the severity of the situation.

I mean no offense, but advice from outsiders is just a waste of time. Too limited a perspective and too much self-interest involved to ever amount to much. Only legitimate focus is that which comes out the Business Office. He got his man...err, woman in the key spot. She'll provide the most accurate rundown.

  • Posting of the Annual Budget on the Web Site:

Section 17-1.2 of the Illinois School Code (105 ILCS 5/17-1.2) requires school districts with web sites to do two things:

    (1) post the current budget, itemized by receipts and expenditures, on their website

    (2) notify parents/guardians that the budget has been posted and the address of the website.

This is not being done in 209, nor is the info on school report cards available on the Web site.

    Any one know why?

  • I would tell Fields to hold his ground against the Board members. Welch, Flowers and Kelly are strong personalities. They will be his biggest challenge. If he learns how to manage the board, he will be successful. I would also tell Fields to trust but verify. There are so many snakes in Proviso politics, that he has to always trust but verify. Finally, I would tell Fields to ignore the pundants. People like Seth Stern, Carl Nyberg and Kevin Beese (before he disappeared), know nothing about government other than to act as critics. Ignore them and he will be okay.

  • What Stan Fields needs to know it that he is getting roughly 30% product of his feeder districts. The rest of the student body is composed of the most mobile and those who lack options.

If he is serious about 209, he will need to stop the bleeding. Over and above the magnet school, he needs to make it possible for AVERAGE students in the feeder schools to see Proviso as a viable school.

If he'd like to see what Proviso SHOULD be, he would need to track the feeder students who leave the district BECAUSE of Proviso.

Any intititive, restructuring or *cringe* yet another FIVE YEAR PLAN will be a futile exercise. The district's root problem is loss of average students between 5th and 9th grades who for obvious reasons flee the district.

  • Fields should not listen to Arnie Bryant or others in the community who don't know education!

  • Don't listen to any of these so cALLed community activists and unelected morons, also don't listen to the board who are full time hacks and stooges!

  • Why would a leader have to waste his/her time surveying the environment in an effort to discern what is the problem? All one need do is look at the data, i.e. test scores and other performance characterictics such as volume of referrals and chronic pattern of awarding low grades. Such patterns are an indication of skill deficits. If you can’t teach in such a culture then you don’t belong.

Lackluster conditions are always the result of a complacent mindset. It’s only natural that a sizable portion of a workforce will exert the minimum effort that is equivalent to the supplying of their own basic needs. In order to increase productivity, and this is the bottom line, one has to simply threaten that lackluster segment with the removal of their cushions.

You do this in part by singling out the most productive segment, then take them under your wing. Reward them for the results they generate. They, in essence become the elites. Those outside the inner circle will, so to speak, see their ranks subject to becoming decimated. They’ll read the handwriting on the wall and decide to step up their act or look for the good life elsewhere.

It ain’t no flatland out there, this is a competition for survival and no one is due a package of entitlements that essentially feathers their own bed while literally tossing those you are supposed to be serving onto the rocky shoals of life.

I’d get underway with the task of cleaning house, and anyone getting in my way would be in for the fight of their life.

  • Whenever we look at quotas of success or failure based on skin color, I ask why we are wasting time looking at this… is the makeup of the NBA based on skin color or performance results? When your wife is hit by a drunk driver, do you care what skin color of the offender is involved? When looking at SAT or ACT test scores, is it skin color that matters? FICA scores don’t adjust up or down on skin color. Is the racial mix of professional boxers the “correct” ratio? Is the racial mixture of jailed offenders “correct” along the Mexican-American border? One more… see if you can find the racial mixture of those paying all US and IL income taxes. Do you think that the skin color mixture is “correct”? If we are going to mandate SOME things be done based on skin color or sex or ethnicity, then we need to do it for EVERYTHING, which will include $$$ received for welfare, WIC, etc. We will need to adjust the $$$ paid to all property taxes and incomes taxes to correctly reflect skin color percentages… right?
It's not about race as Flowers and Kelly state, to try to get elected on false premises and failed ideolgy, similar to the old communist manifesto, instead it's about parents who care, children who seek to learn and teachers teachin, spend all your money on the children and teachers and get rid of all the unneccesary deadweight in the school, then Proviso will do well. But Mr. Fields if you get rid of all the dead weight in Proviso, then Maywood would fall into a deeper depression economically because 209 and 89 are the only employers of Maywood residents!

  • People Welch will be over in April. He will completely be abolished in two years when he runs for State rep. and school board at the same time. Let's just kick Welch where it hurts in his pockets. Call the feds!
