POL, Ald. "Ike" Carothers vs. Ald. Ed Smith [IL-07]

With the understanding that the question is moot if Congressman Danny K. Davis is not selected to replace County Board President John Stroger in the November general election....

What I've heard is that the two heavyweights competing to replace Davis are Alderman Isaac "Ike" Carothers and Alderman Ed Smith.

Who else is a serious candidate? Who wins among the township and ward committeemen if they are forced to choose between Carothers and Smith?

And does a Carothers vs. Smith contest put Sen. Don Harmon, the Oak Park Democratic Committeeman, in a tough spot? Harmon owes Carothers for watching his back in the 29th Ward, but Carothers has some baggage in Oak Park.

P.S. What should be added to the Wikipedia article on Congressman Davis?

10 Comments:

  • If Harmon turns his back on Carothers, then he will be defeated in the 2008 primary without a doubt.

  • How much of the senate district is in Chicago? How much is in Carother's sphere of influence?

BTW, Is Harmon on a four-year term or a two-year in this cycle? If he has a four-year term he's not even running in a Dem primary until 2010.

  • um, re Danny in Wikipedia:

    - Alderman
    - Committeeman (and then...not)
    - Cook County Commissioner
    - Ran for Mayor

You can find the geographic boundaries of the 39th IL Senate District here: http://www.illinoisatlas.com/illinois/political/political.htm althought that just shows the County boundaries. I'd estimate about 35%.

Sen. Harmon is on a two-year term after he's re-elected this year - he's coming to the end of a four.

And Ike v. Ed to replace Danny? Puh-lease. How about IL House Rep. Graham? (or Yarborough...)

  • If Carothers fields a black candidate and a more moderate Democrat runs and sops up much of the Leyden Township/36th Ward vote, then Harmon could come in 2nd in a three way race. The only reason Banks agreed to go all out for Harmon in 2006 was that he was supporting his guy Andolino, who got crushed for judge. If Banks sits on his hands, (along with Carothers fielding a candidate and a candidate from Leyden or 36th Ward) then Harmon will be sure to lose.

  • I don't know about Carothers. He has some baggage in Chicago too. Most people know that Carothers is a yes man for Daley. I wonder if he is a serious candidate. I hope not...

  • anonymous,

    Here's a warning.

Pick a pseudonym. I usually delete posts under "anonymous" because it gets confusing if more than one person posts under "anonymous".

Thanks. And welcome to Proviso Probe.

  • Harmon will just do what he's told to do - like he always does. He's a freakin puppet.

  • For whom is Harmon a puppet?
