ED, principal out at Garfield [D89]

Maywood Herald (Chris LaFortune):
[Superintendent Cynthia] Broughton would not discuss [Stefan] Fisher's removal, saying it was a personnel matter. School Board President Grady Rivers said Garfield is one of the district's poor performing schools and the board believe it was time for a change.

Board members are too involved in personnel issues across Proviso Township.

The community is entitled to an explanation when a principal is fired. But it should be the superintendent giving the explanation primarily. The superintendent works for the board. The principals work for the superintendent.

Grady Rivers is amiable, but... how to put this nicely?... he's not the... he ain't the "go to guy" on complex problems. He's a political place holder who does as he's told. He's a foot soldier in a crooked political organization.

So, if Cynthia Broughton says it was time for Fisher to go because of test scores, I'd tend to believe it. If Grady Rivers says the same thing, I tend to think Rivers' political bosses have someone else they'd prefer in the position.

  • Well to tell you the truth "more-signs-than-votes, this seems to be the time of year when the three stooges make all of thier rediculous inside moves with administrators in the surrounding areas. Just keep an eye on D209, D89, and also D88. they will all begin a systematic change and demotion of admin staff. they are all in this togeather. The issue in D89 is simple. that principal did not play the game with rivers and they made a move. this is very common in this township. just keep an open eye out for the June board meetings in this township. you will be shocked as to what is about to take place across the board.

  • Here we go once "MOORE" people of this wonderful Township. I really dont want to listen to rumors or false statements about our great failures in the political arena of Maywood.and the Township. Does anyone know about a big party that has been planed by Mr. Moore and Mr. Welch at an establishment that serves Liquor. Oh...I forgot to mention the other part of the rumor. the party is for children.High school age children. Please people ,lets stop the madness. Why are we promoting this type of atmosphere for our children? Let`s have a nice affair at one of our local high schools in the gym like the good old days and call it a day. Perferably at the $40 Mil. New school. Just a thought.

  • THIS SHOULD BE TO NO SUPRISE TO ANYONE IN THIS COMMUNITY. THESE PEOPLE WILL DO WHATEVER THEY CAN IN THE NAME OF ANYTHING ELSE TO GET VOTES. RIGHT NOW AFTER THAT ROYAL-OF-AN-ASS-WHOPING THAT MOORE TOOK IN THE LAST ELECTION HE HAS TO DO ANYTHING TO KEEP HIS VOTES ALIVE FOR THE RECORDER OF DEEDS ELECTION. WHAT A BETTER WAY TO DO IT OTHER THAN BY USING THE CHILDREN. SICK ISNT IT??? BUT THATS THE WAY THESE PEOPLE OPERATE. MY DAUGHTER CAME HOME WITH ONE OF THE PARTY PLUGGERS AND I INSTANTLY TOLD HER THAT SHE WOULD NOT BE GOING. WE HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE AT ANOTHER LOCAL VENUE THAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE FOR TEENAGERS IN STONE PARK. THAT PLACE IS A RAPE CASE WAITING TO HAPPEN. UNDERAGE MINORS HAVE ACCESS TO LIQUOR AND BEER. HOW CAN YOU MIX A CLUB SETTING WITH MINORS AND ADULTS AND WHEN I SAY ADULTS I AM TALKING THIER AGE RENGE,21,22,23 YRS OLD. THAT IS WHATS GOING ON AT THE NITRO CLUB ON LAKE STREET.IF YOU HAVE SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN OR KNOW ANYONE WHO HAS CHILDREN, KEEP THEM AWAY FROM THE wELCH / MOORE VENUE. I AGREE WITH THE OTHER BLOGGER, LETS DO IT AT ARE SCHOOL GYMS WHERE WE KNOW THEY WILL BE SAFE AND THERE WILL BE NO ALOCHOHOL SOLD OR AT THIER ACCESS.

  • why treat us like slaves said...
For the past 10 years, this township has been used as a dumping ground for the poor. Because of it’s location in Cook County, the district has been used to warehouse poor Chicagoans. This region has the lowest real estate value, in the area.. The poorest suburb in the US is found here - Maywood; and Bellwood is not far behind.Proviso township represents a region of Illinois similar in some ways to Haiti.

This district has became a lab for government social welfare programs. Businesses moved out as local governments focused on providing social services over business services. This region became the land of housing projects, Section 8 housing, fatherless families, gangs, crime, and failing schools. White flight has caused a housing boom in DuPage for families searching for safe affordable housing.

This region has been hit by the 21st Century. Steel mills, manufacturing plants, and blue collar jobs have been leaving since 1979. With a generation of Republican leadership in Springfield, this Democratic region was ignored.
We are witnesses to what happens when a region is only supported by welfare checks and ignored by both political parties.

My concerns stem from the fact that both the current useless bunch in charge of these school districts, as well as the oppostion has no plans other than they seeking to see there names on the banners !I believe and hope that with "No Child left behind law", that these three school districts shouls be close to being taken over by either the state or the federal goverment. That is the only solution for these school districts because neither side is worthy to sit on the boards. These individuals are poorly educated and they don't have integrity to lead these districts, and most importantly they think that they are the educators, the superintendents and principals!!!!

  • Listen my fellow neighbors and taxpayers. It`s not Grady`s fault or any of these current school board members fault that are schools are crap. I graduated from emerson School on washington Blvd. in maywood in the 70`s. It was being controled then by the political machine.they messed it up and now we have to support our boards and help them clean it up.That goes for D88 also.Bellwood is next to our town and if they fail so do we. Lets get rid of all the machine polititians. its easy. And please Mr. Welch, pull away from those guys. you dont need them. you would get much more support without them. you can still come back from this. stop selling your sole for a few whorish relatioships with the devil. In regards to the party that you and Mr. moore are throwing for the children at Mariella`s Banquet Hall, just make sure they put all the alcohol up and it is not in the sight of the students and you will be covered by law. it`s not your club anyway so whats the big deal. at least the children wont be at that Stone park club or on the streets.

  • Not Grady's fault? The previous blogger wants to excuse the President of District 89 schools and blame the low scores etc. on previous board members.

Now, I'll give you this, Grady is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he allows himself to be used as a pawn to keep Melrose rollin' with jobs and contracts.

There is where the blame lies. He is not innocent. He has a 40K job as clerk with the township, 65K as a fireman with Maywood and kickbacks from whomever is stupid enough to do pay them.

I went to school with Gar and he ain't a bad guy but he ain't wearing a white hat either. He says that the schools are doing better but I can't tell cause the scores are for shit. But, one thing is working well and that's the contacts for his homies and jobs for his boyhood friends.

Suffice it to say...he's bought and paid for and the kids in the district will forever be crippled.

  • If district 89 was doing a good job at teaching our kid's to read and write, then . Grady Rivers and his gang , I would say they are doing a good job. but that's not the case. we have teachers being remove for the wrong reason's and on.now one should ask. If the kid's in 89 were doing aveage test scornig,in reading and math. Then did, Mr Grady Rivers. Send his children to one of the school in the district. now you guy's do the math. DISTRICT 89 IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR THEM TO LEARN.
