POL, replacing Stroger

Who will replace John Stroger if he steps down as County Board President?

Stroger supposedly wants Todd Stroger, his son to have the job.

One plan has Dorothy Brown taking the County Board President position and Todd Stroger becoming Clerk of the Circuit Court.

The 19th Ward is pushing Cook County Assessor Jim Houlihan to replace Stroger.

The Democratic Machine wants to keep the status quo as much as possible. The formula of combining a Black candidate with the old school organizations seems to be the most viable for keeping the patronage system in county government.

BTW, could Alderman Ed Smith be in the mix? Brown replacing Stroger and Smith replacing Brown would seem to be an easy sell to many of the players. However, Stroger sees that Lipinski, Hynes, Madigan, Mell, etc. were able to deliver for their children. Stroger wants the same for his son.

  • Interesting. People are talking in the black community, but I have a feeling that the young Stroger will be the front-runner for the black community. Out of all those people, he may be the one who is easily controllable. I can't wait to see what happens.

  • Can we chill out on the personal attacks?

Welch is a relative of Cynthia. She's not going to publicly diss her relative, so don't expect her to do it.

  • Hey, what is really the health status of Stroger? Has anyone heard from him outside his immediate family. Is he able to talk? Does he know what day it is? Does he know he won the election? Is he on life support? I did not vote for him and I am black. Why should I vote for someone who more than likely will be unable to serve the community. Where was Stroger when Harold Washington needed him? Where was Stroger when Obama needed him? Stroger and his buddies "less than 30% of the vote" Chris WELCH and the FORMER Proviso Democratic Committeeman MOORE, need to go somewhere and sit down. Hey Chris Welch, you got another election with the school board next April, you better get ready because Sister Yarbrough, you know that sister who whipped your ass and your buddie Moore ass, is coming for those three seats and guest what, she is going to take them and around this time next year, you will be the FORMER president. Tell you buddies working for 209 they better start floating their resumes, they have about 12 months left to get a new job. Hey, let's start with your Godmother at Proviso West and work our way down. Hey Chris where are you going to get your money for the next election, it seems that you used up alot of that money from the 40 million dollor project. I cannot wait to vote next April.

  • Todd will not be in the mix. Dorothy Brown, Ald. Smith, Jesse White, Emil Jones and other will be tapped before Todd would ever get the call. The Committeemen will make the decision based on who will do the best job of keeping the status quo.

  • Todd would likely take over his father's Commissioner seat, but not the Presidency.

  • The odds are on Dorothy Brown for Board President. Then, Todd Stroeger to fill in as the Circuit Court Clerk. Probably the deal Brown made to for her stay out of the primary anyway.

Why not Karen Yarbrough for County Board President? She did have a pretty impressive victory. Plus, it's likely that the Proviso Mayors would like to get her promoted out of the way right about now.

Or is Rep. Yarbrough waiting in the wings to run for Danny Davis' seat in Congress when he steps down in two years?

  • I heard that Eugene "Fragile Flower" Moore is going to get the nod to replace Stroger!
Also talk of Ike Carruthers possibly getting the postion are being heard downtown!
P.S. What about Welch taking the Cook County Board Presidency?

  • Carothers makes sense.

He's got the organizational capability and he's a machine guy, just like Stroger. Nobody--well nobody but Stroger's relatives--could complain that the voters were getting someone significantly different than Stroger by the committeemen selecting Carothers.

  • dorothy brown thinks she's the one, but i hear that she is not well-liked by some politicos, nor has she earned it. who can run this group- non other than ed smith who wanted to run for the seat anyway. but what about stroger's surrogate son marlow colvin. he's smart, in springfield leadership, an eight ward hack, and he'll tow the mark. stroger would trust him cause he darn near raised him. todd is simply not strong enough to fill his dad's shoes. but colvin could and should. i'm sure there's another 8th ward hack to send to springfield to take colvin's place?
on another note, what's with meeks? does anyone take him seriously? he's just another jackson clone looking for a hustle.

  • I've been negligent lately in deleting posts under "anonymous".

Please don't post under anonymous. When you post, select "other" and choose a pseudonym. It makes it easier to read a thread with multiple entries.

    Thank you.

  • My guess is that the suggestion Moore or Welch would be tapped is an attempt to ridicule the two of them.

  • I don't see Welch being a successful political candidate for higher office without a "born again" experience and some time lapse.

I don't think there's any way to interpret last Tuesday's results that doesn't include acknowledging the large number of people that really dislike Chris Welch.

    But what do I know?

  • OK, Ike would be a good and tough opponent, but the jobs go to his ward then.........same holds true for Ed Smith (another decent fella in my opinion).

Dorothy already lives in the 8th Ward and ads extra jobs to the group from that ward. The Committeemen supported Pat Levar back in the day when Slating occurred for The Cercuit Clerk position.

Todd Stroger has got to be the choice. How many jobs does an alderman get anyhow ? Todd will keep the jobs in the 8th Ward.

If it was good enough for Jeremiah Joyce and his kid, good enough for Madigan and his daughter, good enough for Daley, good enough for Ald. Mell and Blagojevich, good enough for Ed Burke and wife judge Ann Burke not to forget his brother St Rep Daniel Burke, good enough for Tom Hynes and son Danny Hines, If Michael McCauliffe can take over his dads seat, and Ike can take over his fathers seat.

Then that should be good enough for Todd Stroger to take over his fathers seat as County Board President
