M06, election results

Congratulations to Proviso Township's new Democratic Committeeman, Karen Yarbrough, and the other primary winners: Congressman Dan Lipinski, Senator Kimberly Lightford, Senator Don Harmon, Rep. Karen Yarbrough and La Shawn Ford.

In Lyons Township Michael J. LaPidus challenged Commissioner Anthony Peraica for Republican Committeeman. With 102 of 117 precincts counted Peraica leads by about 150 votes. LaPidus needs 60% of the outstanding vote to beat Peraica.

Referenda:

District 95 (Brookfield & La Grange Park elementary schools) voted to raise taxes.

District 208 (Riverside-Brookfield HS) voted to raise taxes.

Bellwood voted to issue bonds for a new library.

Broadview resoundingly defeated home rule.

Brookfield increased sales tax by one percent.

Cicero defeated a referendum to end block parties.

Melrose Park defeated a one percent sales tax increase.

North Riverside overwhelmingly approved a one percent sales tax increase.

For results see Sun-Times.

  • I thought it was interesting that in the Melrose Park Herald article about the tax increase no one would go on record as opposing the tax increase.

Yet, the Melrose Park tax increase was the only local tax increase defeated by the voters.

Perhaps completely stifling dissent isn't the best way to build consensus.

  • I'm glad LaShawn won and congrats on your girl Yarbrough...

I learned a lot about local politics...

  • I also preferred La Shawn Ford to Calvin Giles.

Giles seemed like he was too easily bullied. And he didn't have a base that would defend him from being pushed around.

Giles didn't have patronage. He didn't have money. He's not a gifted communicator, like Danny K. Davis.

So, if someone like Rev. Meeks threatened Giles, he pretty much had to cave.

Also, Giles had gone as high as he was gonna go in the legislature. He wasn't going to become the next Michael Madigan or Emil Jones. He wasn't even on track to be the next Barbara Flynn Currie or Ricky Hendon.

Calvin Giles isn't a bad person. But he's a mediocre legislator. And the system is supposed to replace mediocre legislators with others that will hopefully be better.

  • Alderman Ed Smith came to Yarbrough's party after the election had been called.

Smith went to the stage and started to criticize people. He listed Yarbrough supporters he never wanted to see again, like Lennel Grace.

And then Smith said Yarbrough supporters shouldn't congratulate themselves.

He said, "It's not like you beat a thoroughbred and a Clydesdale. You beat a jackass and a donkey."

  • Carl,
You should check the actual results, and not what the papers said. The Bellwood referendum to enrich Bruno lost, and the Melrose Park referendum won.

  • Hey tired, you sure are and dumb to boot.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 8:34 AM, March 23, 2006

  • YESSSSSSSS!

Yarbrough sure did beat some Jackasses! Now it is time to clean up Proviso! Yarbrough has my support all the way. She whopped Welch's butt, just like everyone predicted! I wonder what Welch has up his dirty sleeve now that he has lost and lost bad.

  • Here are the actual results from Cook County Clerk's office:

    Village of Bellwood Referenda

    YES 1132 48.21%
    NO 1216 51.79%

    Village of Melrose Park Referenda

    YES 490 51.69%
    NO 458 48.31%

So, anonymous, what's so dumb about actually finding out facts? Carl, please at least try to get your facts straight, correct yourself when you're wrong, and delete anonymous posters consistently.

  • @Carl: I totally agree with you about Giles. I'm sure he not a bad person, but his time was up. There are others, but at least the voters were intelligent enough to get rid of him. I'm thinking about working with the Ford campaign in the general election in the fall. I want to know how he managed to maneuver around Danny Davis.

  • A LaShawn Ford Supporter and Worker says:
I am sorry Cynthia, but LaShawn Ford only wants honest and decent people working with him. He does not want any rejects from Welch's campaign. Ford is a creditable young man and does not want any of Welch's BAD LUCK around him. Ford knows about Welch's tainted past and the horrible things he has done in Proviso Township.
Just look at what Welch has done to Moore. Welch brought Moore down in Proviso Township and added to his defeat in the commiteeman election. People did not like Moore, but they REALLY HATED him when he aligned himself with Welch.
Maybe you should just stick to helping Welch out; he needs all the help in world right now. Help him pick his face up off the ground and wipe the egg off of his face. Sorry, but your kind of help is not wanted. Cuddles Cuz!

  • How can you sit on this blog and bash Rep.giles like he never was even in the House. Giles and his family are true to the people and are dedicated to politics. Yes, we all have a few skelitons in the closet but come on guys, that was a political take over by the Hendon crew on the West side of Chi. I will still support Rep. Giles. "Remember ,,TWO year terms" just (2).

On the other hand THANK GOD FOR STATE REP. KAREN YARBROUGH !!!The political machine in the township of Proviso has been decapetated. I would say nutered but neither one of the bums had balls from the start of the race. How dare a self centered arogant person like Welch run against a seasoned and honest woman like Yarbrough. Chris Welch is a political disappointment to the Township as well as the State. Great lookin t-shirts chris but remember next time that Signs, shirts, hats, and all (9) of your direct mail pieces dont vote. "PEOPLE VOTE" REAL DOWN TO EARTH, GRASS ROOTS FOLKS". you were at your roads end and you let Gene moore drag you the rest of the way. the people are tired chris and now its time to wake them up for Dist. 209,89, and 88. its over machine guys. Dont worry Dr. Flowers we gottcha back in "07" just get your ticket formed and watch the people speak again. they did it on tuesday and they will come through in "07" for the schools in our township. goodbye and goodnite ........Now the CATHY KITCHEN can expand and start serving good soul food dinners seeing that it is no longer the sespool for the Welch/moore crew.or is it the Moore / welch crew? hey Chris? Get that dam red sign out of Trustee Phylistine murphy yard. or did she support you undercover.ops..sorry trustee. you need to learn who brought you to the dance sista girl.Whateverrrrrrr..

    GOOO YARBROUGH!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Anonymous: After seeing how the Yarbrough, Davis, and other ran their campaign, there is no such thing as honesty. Can you believe with all the Shenanigans from Yarbrough’s supporters, she only managed to squeak by with ~52% of the vote in Chicago. And this was done, solely because of me. Towards the end, they had to bring out the big guns "the precinct captain (Cal) who started strong arming elderly voters (threatening them with services that he allegedly provide for them). Therefore, anybody would be lucky to have me on their campaign, even your girl Yarbrough, because this girl is effective.

  • Cynthia, I'm for cleaning up the 29th Ward, but you are seeing only part of the picture.

If you saw how Welch and Moore played the game in Proviso, you'd have a different perspective on things.

By Blogger Carl Nyberg, at 3:37 PM, March 24, 2006

  • Cynthia commented that the race was closer in Chicago than the district as a whole. It's an accurate observation.

By Blogger Carl Nyberg, at 3:38 PM, March 24, 2006

  • Carl,

You and cynthia are both wrong. Yarbrough won the city by an even greater percentage than she did the suburbs. In Chicago, she got 695 votes to Welch's 196. That is with 7 out of 8 precincts reporting. That's 78% to 22%. In the suburban part of her district, she got 8135 votes to Welch's 2985 votes. That is with 82 out of 89 precincts reporting. That's 73% to 27%. She trounced him anyway you look at it. Just don't take my word for it, look it up on the Cook County Clerk's website (www.voterinfonet.com), and the Chicago Board of Elections website(www.chicagoelections.com).

  • Question to all bloggers, After Welch's debaucle and Moore's lost, what happens to all there monkeys?
Such as Brian Cross,Campaign manager for Welch and Moore's Chief of Staff and also Don"Big Pussy" Sloan, and Tom
Walsh? After all the B.S. nad vicous attacks on Yarbrough and her husband, as well as there vicious attacks on Yarbrough's allies, both on the radio and even more inflammatory off the radio, what happens to them? Do they contniue in there posts?
What about ,Yarbrough and her allies,Pascuale,Esposito,Vicenek,Flowers,Bryant,Yanez and others, who were attacked constantly and harrassed by Sloan and Cross, what will they do?
Also is it true, that Sloan and Cross have already reached out to Yarbrough and feel that they have done nothing wrong, with there rumors and inneundos against her and her allies? Will they continue to flourish and make money, like there friends Jimmy Perelli and Tom Walsh?
