ETHNICITY, NC Dems apologize for using terror to implement "White" supremacy

The North Carolina Democratic Party has apologized for its role in an 1898 riot that deposed the integrated government of Wilmington, NC and replaced it with a "Whites" only government. See Star-News (Veronica Gonzalez). The incident was mentioned recently on Proviso Probe in a summary of a Dave Neiwert post on sundown towns. One of the most significant aspects was that the federal government refused to act to oppose "White" supremacists using murder and terrorism to take control of local governments.

This incident reminds us that America did not live out Lincoln's ideals after the Civil War. Some of the discrimination against Blacks was passive. However, the passive discrimination was backed with the threat of being implemented by violence, including violence against "Whites" who violated the segregationist and discriminatory policies.
