ETHNICITY, Latinos in the news

Crain's (Daniel Rome Levine) has an article about how Latinos now outnumber African-Americans in the Chicago area.

Sun-Times (Dave Newbart) has an article on the big demonstration against the Sensenbrenner immigration bill on Friday. The crowd may have been over 100,000.

This paragraph jumped out at me.
Organizers say they hired as many as 200 buses to bring immigrants in from the suburbs, other parts of the state and even bordering states. Those included 40 buses from Aurora, 33 from Melrose Park and two each from DeKalb and Rock Falls.

  • dave says: heard there was a beating at Proviso West last week involving a Latino girl. The principal refused to meet with the parents because they were too angry. Word is that Ms. Walace wants all the latinos out of her school. She only wants to worry about blacks. Maybe she's better look again at how many busses came out of Melrose Park.

    I don't believe that is true about Mrs. Wallace and her JUST wanting the Latinos out of Proviso. She does not want Black students there either. She wants to return Proviso back to how it was when she started in the early 1980's predominately white. So for the record, she could care less about Blacks or Latino students. Her concern is only about pleasing the whites. She is a disgrace to the Black race and all educators that teach minority children.

  • dave says: I think you're wrong. Look at all the people Wallace has surrounded herself with. They're ALL black. You are right in a way, she does seem to come down hard on some of the black students. The problem is she flies off the handle. She wants the black students to behave like 1980. Second rumor I heard is that she wants to fire all the 1st and 2nd yr. teachers and replace them with blacks. I think you're wrong about Wallace...she wants to make the place as black as she can.

    You have a point Dave, but the Blacks she has put in positions are DUMB. They can't think for themselves, and they are at her beck and call. They do what ever she says. Gale and Curtis act like Amos and Andy. They are her little robots. The teachers at Proviso are scared of Wallace and Wallace is scared of White people. She suffers from trying to always please Whites. She is not for the best interest of Black students. She is a hypocrite and should not have been given the principalship.

  • I don't know the principal at Proviso West, but I don't think that is the issue here; the issue is how the Latinos & Hispanics are raising the issues that are important to us. I myself am Latina, whom with the grace of God, came to this land with my parents for a better future.

    We are not asking for anything that we do not deserve--respect, and just for the simple fact that we are humans.

    Fact is that we are here to stay; we are not all perfect, but the majority of us are here for a better way of life for us, and our children.

    There will always be ignorants who are racist, but we can't change them, we can only learn to NOT be like them.
