ETHNICITY, Jesse Martinez involved in Elgin conflict [SP]

Jesse Martinez is a trustee for Stone Park and Proviso Township. The CEO of Sherman Hospital in Elgin is pissed at Martinez for doing successful community organizing. Sherman hospital is trying to move from Elgin's east side to the west side.

Chicago Tribune (Richard Wronski) has an article that makes accusations against Martinez that are not clearly explained.

Wronski quotes the CEO as saying Martinez is acting "suspiciously overzealous" but doesn't allege any self-serving motive. It implies the allegation is that he works for a rival hospital in another part of the article, but offers no evidence of this.

The article also quotes the CEO claiming Martinez is making "false allegations".

  • I read the article and if it is true, bravo to Martinez ! It is about time that people stand up to these hospitals who bilk the sick and the communities they serve and then try to close once they don't like there new clientel! I would bet you that Westlake, which is owned by Ressurection, will try to leave Proviso in the Future, because Westlake wants only private insurance, not the poor blacks, hispanics and whites from Proviso!
Kudos to Jesse Martinez, who is a Proviso Township Trustee and Stone Park Trustee, as well as Jesus Espinoza, and Chris Welch, who has helped them rally the troops in Elgin and has spoken at all spanish events in Spanish and has offered to represent the hispanic community of Elgin,Pro-Bono, to help them save the only hospital in there area, because I heard that if allowed to move,Sherman Hospital will be over 5 miles away, and in an emergency , such as a heart attack or car crash, the 5 mile traveling time to the ER,with remember traffic congestion, can mean life or death!

  • I was involved in Elgin at the request of a friend. Mr. Jesus Espinoza and I have been good friends for a long time. He is a resident of Elgin and a community activist. He believes, and after reviewing his research, I agreed that the only reason Sherman hospital was leaving the poor hispanics without a hospital was to pursue higher income residents. The city of Elgin approved 14,000 new homes on the westside with an average price of 500,000. Residents on the eastside are not as fortunate. In addition, eastside residents will have to cross a bridge and train tracks to arrive at shermans emergency room without any other possible route. In an emergency, time is the difference between life or death. Your financial situation should not be the reason you do not have access to a hopital. We successfully obtained 870 signatures from eastside residents that support Mr. Espinozas cause. The CEO of Sherman is trying to discredit those signatures but its ok, I've heard those residents and their concerns, basically, thats all that matters to me. I understand his greedy profit position. I understand that Sherman hospital didn't invite me to their party but then again no body said I couldn't go. I'm surprised that the CEO of sherman is more worried about me than the real issues concerning the community. I support my friend and his efforts to help his community.

  • I also say, Kudos to Jesse

He's a decent guy who takes care of his friends and thank you for not discrediting yourself by including Chris Welch in your statement because I have never heard him speak Spanish to ANYONE! He probably was not even there. Saluting... you had better have Welch clean your ears
