RECREATION, YMCA to Proviso [FP]

The Village of Forest Park and the YMCA have agreed to a price for the property where the YMCA would locate (south of Madison and east of Concordia Cemetery). See Forest Park Review (Josh Adams).

I live about equal distance from the current YMCA location and the proposed location. But the move should make it easier for Proviso residents, especially from Forest Park, Maywood and people who work at Maybrook to go to the YMCA.

I hope the move doesn't undermine fund raising in Oak Park and River Forest.

  • This is the dumbest use of land I ever heard of. It will be off the tax rolls. The village will have no say so on operations. Taxpayers are left subsidizing the reduced sales price. What about redeveloping the entire area to take advantage of the Blue Line and bus service? Keep open space but make the area contribute to the local economy. What happened to vision? This is really going to hurt FP in the short run and long run. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

  • fp-er, will the YMCA contribute to the quality of life for Forest Park residents?

Is improving the quality of life a legitimate goal for the village?

  • Everything contributes to quality of life. That is a really lame question. The YMCA is not free for residents, yet they pay no taxes. Businesses on Madison Street contribute more to quality of life than this boondoggle. You'll see what a disaster this will be - just don't complain when you get your next tax bill.

  • Yeah, it's so great forest park residents are footing the bill so maywood residents can come and use the ymca. Think many of them are going to be patronizing madison street? fp-re is right - this one wasn't thought through.

  • Since the village already owns the property fp-er, isn't it already off the tax rolls? Since it is, how will this affect your real estate tax bill? How does a tavern that serves alcohol and allows patrons to smoke contribute more to quality of life than a YMCA with a state of the art fitness center, a community gathering place, a brand new pool, outdoor sports activities and both adult and child continuing education opportunities? You sound like a bitter person when you post.
